Muhammad Abubakar III, Sultan of Sokoto |
Sa'ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, has declared the conclusion of Ramadan for this year.
The team of astronomers and court officials observed the Shawwal crescent in Tumair, Saudi Arabia, prior to this.
Since the Islamic calendar is based on the lunar cycle, Ramadan, the ninth month, has always either had 29 or 30 days, depending on when the new moon is visible. It has been determined that the month of Shawwal will officially begin on Friday.
Sultan Abubakar requested in his announcement that the Nigerian Muslim community hold the Eid el-Fitr celebration on Friday, April 21, 2023, to commemorate the completion of Ramadan.
Sultan's moon seeing committee reported seeing the new moon in several areas of the nation.
