Tottenham Sacks Ange Postecoglou Just 16 Days After Europa League Triumph

Tottenham Sacks Ange Postecoglou Just 16 Days After Europa League Triumph

 By: Manoah Kikekon

Ange Postecoglou

Tottenham Hotspur have sacked manager Ange Postecoglou just 16 days after he led the club to their first trophy in 17 years a 1-0 Europa League final victory over Manchester United in Bilbao.

Despite ending Spurs' long wait for silverware, the Australian’s disastrous Premier League campaign where the club finished 17th, their worst-ever league position proved decisive in the board’s shock decision.

Postecoglou’s tenure began brightly, with Spurs unbeaten in their first 10 league games, earning him three consecutive Premier League Manager of the Month awards. However, injuries, suspensions, and his high-risk tactical approach led to a dramatic collapse.

In 2024, Tottenham won just a handful of league matches, suffering humiliating defeats to rivals Arsenal and Chelsea. The breaking point came at Stamford Bridge, where Postecoglou cupped his ears at furious travelling fans, exposing the growing rift between manager and supporters.

Postecoglou had famously vowed, “I always win things in my second year,” after an early defeat to Arsenal. True to his word, he delivered the Europa League, Spurs’ first European trophy since 1984. Yet, the board deemed domestic failure unacceptable.

In a statement, Tottenham said, “Whilst winning the Europa League ranks as one of the Club’s greatest moments, we cannot base our decision on emotions. A change is necessary to move forward.”

With Postecoglou gone, Brentford’s Thomas Frank has emerged as the frontrunner to take over. Negotiations are expected to begin imminently.

For Postecoglou, it’s a brutal exit after a rollercoaster two years a trophy won, but a league campaign in ruins.

Hon. Mobolaji Ogunlende the pioneer RAK Foundation

The Badagry Divisional Football Association (BDFA), in partnership with RAK Development Foundation, has unveiled plans for the 2025 season of the BDFA-RAK League. This highly anticipated competition, which has become a cornerstone of grassroots football in the Badagry Division, is set to kick off in February with a minimum of 40 participating teams.

Now in its fifth year, the BDFA-RAK League continues to champion youth development and community empowerment through football. Sponsored by Hon. Mobolaji Ogunlende, Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, through his NGO, RAK Foundation - an organization committed to youth empowerment, gender equality, and community growth - the league has grown into a platform for nurturing local talent and creating opportunities for athletes to reach global heights.

The league is structured into two phases: the Regular League Series and the Super 8 Tournament. Teams will be drawn into four groups of 10, representing the BDFA's zonal jurisdictions—Badagry Zone, Ojo Zone, Amuwo Odofin Zone, and Ajeromi Ifelodun Zone. Each zone will play 45 matches, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the Super 8 Tournament.

The zonal format is designed to reduce travel costs, enhance accessibility, and ensure effective management across all communities under the BDFA’s jurisdiction. In total, 194 matches are expected to be played this season, comprising 180 in the Regular League Series and 14 in the Super 8 Tournament.

The BDFA-RAK League offers trophies and cash prizes for the top four teams, alongside individual awards such as Most Valuable Player (MVP), Highest Goal Scorer, Best Goalkeeper, Best Coach, Best Referee, and Best Behaved Team.

Over the years, the league has discovered and nurtured exceptional talents now excelling within and beyond Nigeria. Players such as Durosinmi Rafiu (Czech Republic), Isa Musa (Denmark), Solomon Agbalaka (Russia), and Ibrahim Olawoyin (Turkey) are shining examples of the BDFA-RAK League's impact, demonstrating that RAK Foundation's annual multimillion-naira investments are yielding the desired results. The league has also elevated teams like Roro House FC (NLO 1) and Young Stars FC (NLO 2) to national leagues.

This year’s edition promises exciting innovations, fanfare, and rewards for players and fans alike. BDFA Chairman, Dr. Osondu Martins, expressed gratitude to Hon. Mobolaji Ogunlende and his RAK Development Foundation for their unwavering support, describing the league as a vital platform for youth empowerment and community development.

Ayisat Yusuf

Ayisat Yusuf, a former football player and Olympian, has launched a female football academy in Iworo, Badagry, Lagos State.

The hostel for the player was opened alongside a gym centre on Sunday, January 5th, 2025.

Ayisat said the project is to empower women and the girl child, which is solely done by her, and she is open to partnerships and support.

She said, "Today remains the most memorable day in my life. This project is from my sole efforts. I couldn't get support or funding from anyone, and hopefully I pray it becomes bigger because it's all about girl children and supporting women, using football as a tool to develop young girls and take them from the street, because I know most of them have aspirations they only need support and motivation.

"I believe most of these young girls are the vulnerable, and when you talk about equality in sport, in Nigeria I don't think we have so much. This is not about the girls alone it's also part of the community development. I just want these girls to believe in themselves and see us as role models, setting a good legacy.

She added that she has set up the foundation to bring hope and development to Badagry and to leave a lasting legacy.

"I strongly believe in development, and I like to look at the angle called rural development. I don't want to be a leader that doesn't have something to show. If you call yourself a role model or legend, you should have something to show for that. Obviously, you could be a celebrity with a bad influence, I believe touching life is very important," Ayisat said.

She added that her vision for the girls is to help them achieve their dreams of becoming great players.

Sarah Kelly, FIFA referee from Austria, said, "Ayisat has done a lot for the community and girls to put them in her footsteps."

Hans Clemo, from Switzerland, "I'm very happy with Ayisat for what she has done for the youths in Nigeria for the last many years. Many former players have forgotten where they came from, but Ayisat did not forget where she came from, which is commendable."

SPORTS: Badagry produces more players than anywhere in Nigeria but not treated fairly - BDFA Chairman

SPORTS: Badagry produces more players than anywhere in Nigeria but not treated fairly - BDFA Chairman

By: Manoah Kikekon

Hon. Mobolaji Ogunlende and Dr. Osondu Ibegbu

Dr. Osondu Martin Ibegbu, the Chairman Badagry Division Football Association (BDFA), has his people are not treated fairly in sports despite that Badagry Division has produced more football players than any other place in Nigeria.

He disclosed this on Saturday at the Badagry Division Football Association BDFA-RAK League Finals against Chekas Utd, held at the Nigerian French Language Village sports field in Ajara, Badagry, Lagos State, concluded on August 31, 2024.

Where Young Stars football club FC has warned the trophy and a cash amount of 500,000 against Chekas Utd with 2 goals to 0.

"This year's league has touched every community in Badagry as they were properly represented, and next year RAK league will be further expanded to encompass the children's league and RAK female league," Ibegbu said.

In an emotional tone Ibegbu said the Lagos State government has not treated Badagry Division well as it remains the only Division in the state with a stadium despite it huge contribution to football in the state and the nation at large.

"Badagry Division, among the five divisions that make up IBILE in Lagos State, has never been treated fairly when it comes to sport. Ikeja has more than one stadium, Epe has, and likewise, Lagos Island. There's none in Badagry Division from Custain to Seme Border. The Lagos State government, through the Ministry of Youths, has not been fair to me, my people, and the people of Badagry entirely. It is not a mistake, and they can't tell me it's an oversight. They kept on building stadiums everywhere, and they can't even bring one to Badagry. How do they want us to develop?

"Badagry produces more players than any other division, more than anywhere in Nigeria. The same Badagry has Emmanuel Amunike, Samson Siasia, Victor Epeba, Ifanyin Unwaize, Henry Unwosu, Taribo West, Sunday Olise, and Ibrahim Olawale, we also had someone like Amalaka who played in Ajngbadi Okoko. Why can't they give us a stadium? Who has Ikeja and Epe produced in the football world?" he added

The event has been sponsored by Mr. Mobolaji Ogunlende, the pioneer RAK Development Foundation, for the past six years. "It started as one simple tournament, but today we are impacting life's,"  Ogunlende said.

Mr. Ogunlende expressed satisfaction with the league’s as it continued to impact young athletes in the region. "The BDFA-RAK League is more than just a competition; it’s a platform for nurturing raw talent, offering valuable exposure, and charting a course for these players to achieve their dreams," he stated.

This year’s tournament showcased 67 teams, each demonstrating exceptional dedication and sportsmanship. In the under-15 category, 36 Lion secured a narrow 1-0 win over Ajao FA, while Legend FC outplayed AJ Young Talented with a 2-0 victory.

If we do the mathematics for group one and two, we have touched the lives of over 2000 youths, giving them the opportunity to showcase their talent. I was doing it before office, I'm now doing it while I'm in office. I will do it after office. One of the teams that played here two years ago, Roro FC, is now playing for the state at the national level, and it's because we gave them this platform and they wan here.

Mr. Ogunlende emphasized that every participant is a winner, congratulating all the teams for their remarkable efforts. The BDFA-RAK League continues to be a significant initiative in Badagry, empowering young footballers to develop their skills and pursue their aspirations.

Mr. Ogunlende said he will like to see women in the next tournament, as a step towards gender equality and also involve more government officials in order to expose these youths to more opportunities.

FG fines Channels TV N5 million for airing an interview with Datti Baba-Ahmed

Channels Television was fined N5 million by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) for airing an interview with Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, Labour Party Vice Presidential candidate.

The NBC stated that the television station violated broadcasting code in a March 27 letter addressed to Channels Chief Executive Officer and obtained on Friday in Abuja.

The letter, titled "Broadcast of an Inciting Interview, A Sanction," was signed by the commission's Director-General, Balarabe Ilelah.

It read in part: “The NBC monitored the broadcast of a live interview of the running mate of the Labour Party Vice presidential candidate, Dr Datti Baba-Ahmed, by the anchor of Politics Today, Seun Okibaloye, on Wednesday, March 22.

“Dr Baba-Ahmed said it will be unconstitutional to swear in an elected president on May 29, 2023, because of election irregularities,” Mr Ilelah said in the letter.

He stated that the broadcast was volatile and had the potential to incite public disorder, and thus violated some sections of the broadcasting code.

This, he claims, includes the section that states that no broadcast shall encourage or incite, be repugnant to public feelings, contain offensive references to any person or organisation, living or dead, or be generally disrespectful to human dignity.

According to the broadcasting code, broadcasters must ensure that no programme contains anything that amounts to subversion of constituted authority, according to Mr Ilelah.

He recalled that the NBC had several times asked Channels Television to consider public interest before broadcasting a programme.

This, he claimed, was to prevent the country from devolving into anarchy.

"As a result, Channels Television is hereby sanctioned and shall pay a penalty of N5,000,000 (five million naira) only in the first instance for the following infractions," he said.

He also stated that any future violations by the television station would result in harsher penalties.

"You are advised to pay within two weeks of receipt of this letter or the penalty will be graduated," said the NBC Director-General.
