553 parcels of cannabis sativa valued N10 million were allegedly intercepted by the Semé Command of the Nigerian Customs Service, and four suspects were also detained.
Comptroller Dera Nnadi, the Customs Area Controller of Seme Customs, said this in a statement on Friday in Semé.
On April 21, Mr. Nenadi claimed that Customs officers on normal patrol along the Abidjan-Lagos Corridor confronted a Ford bus carrying the contraband.
"Upon search of the bus, seven large sacks containing 553 parcels of cannabis sativa, also known as Indian hemp, were discovered.
“Also, Four male occupants of the vehicle, comprising of two civilians and two members of one of the sister security agencies conveying the contraband items were arrested.
“The contraband narcotics worth about N10 million and the means of conveyance were taken to the station at Seme and detained, pending further investigations.
“Also taken to the station are the four male suspects who have volunteered statements.
“However, the two members of one of the sister security agencies were handed over to their agency for further necessary action.
“Preliminary investigation following the questioning of the suspects revealed that the Indian hemp was destined for Kaduna State,” he said.
Mr. Nnadi condemned the dishonest methods of subsistence used by some members of society who showed no regard for the harmful consequences of hard narcotics, which fueled crime in the nation.
He asked people in communities who travelled along the Seme Corridor to use the Nigeria Customs Service's trade facilitation efforts and conduct legal commerce.
In order to prevent smugglers from taking advantage of the public holidays to commit their heinous crimes, the controller issued a warning to all parties involved, including officers and soldiers of the command and sister border agencies along the corridor.
He further instructed them to make sure that, as always, all facilities and crucial government infrastructure in the relevant jurisdiction were protected at this time.
