Lagos Assembly Summons LASIEC Over Council Election Guidelines

Lagos State Assembly

The Lagos State House of Assembly has called on the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) to provide clear guidelines for the forthcoming local government elections.

The decision came after Rotimi Ajomale, Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, Public Petitions, and LASIEC, moved a motion during Thursday’s plenary session in Ikeja.

LASIEC had earlier announced July 12 as the date for the council polls, with a possible rerun scheduled for July 19. The elections will determine 57 council chairmanship seats and 376 councillor positions across Lagos’ 20 local governments and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).

Ajomale emphasized the need for LASIEC officials to appear before the House and outline their readiness. “The public is asking questions, and as committee chairman, I can’t answer them alone. LASIEC must clarify the election procedures,” he stated.

Supporting the motion, Kehinde Joseph raised concerns over the commission’s delay in briefing the assembly, calling for immediate action. Solomon Bonu (Badagry I) pointed out that opposition parties had questioned the election guidelines, urging LASIEC to address these concerns.

Meanwhile, Stephen Ogundipe, Chairman of the House Committee on Information and Strategy, sought details on LASIEC’s security arrangements for the polls.

Speaker Mudashiru Obasa affirmed that LASIEC must present its preparations to ensure a transparent and credible electoral process.

Dominc Dansu Declares intention for Badagry West LCDA Chairmanship, Ward E Demands Equitable Representation

Dominc Dansu Declares intention for Badagry West LCDA Chairmanship, Ward E Demands Equitable Representation

 By: Manoah kikekon

Prince Dominic Dansu

In a historic move poised to reshape local governance in Badagry West LCDA, Prince Dominic Omotayo Dansu has officially announced his bid for Executive Chairman in the upcoming local government elections.

The declaration has ignited a wave of enthusiasm, especially among Ward E residents, who see this as their chance to finally secure equitable political representation.

"This is the hope of the common people in Badagry West," declared a community leader during a pivotal strategy session. "By God’s grace, Ward E will produce the next Chairman, and Prince Dominic Omotayo Dansu is our chosen leader."

Supporters of Prince Dansu have vowed unwavering dedication to his campaign, firmly stating that he will not withdraw in favor of any rival candidate. They highlight the decades-long neglect faced by Ward E, which has never held key political positions—a glaring disparity fueling their demand for change.

Political analysts point out that Ward E stands alone in Badagry West LCDA’s history as the only ward never to produce an Executive Chairman, State House of Assembly member, or House of Representatives representative. This systemic exclusion has galvanized grassroots backing for Dansu’s candidacy.

"The time for fairness, inclusion, and justice is now. Ward E must claim its rightful seat in leadership, and Prince Dansu embodies that vision," emphasized a campaign organizer.

As mobilization efforts intensify, all attention turns to Ward E, where a historic shift in power could soon unfold. Will this be the election that finally breaks the cycle of marginalization? Stay tuned as the race heats up.

Nigeria’s Poverty Crisis to hit 3.6% Surge by 2027 - World Bank

Nigeria’s Poverty Crisis to hit 3.6% Surge by 2027 - World Bank

By: Manoah kikekon

World Bank

The World Bank warns that poverty in Nigeria is set to rise sharply, with an estimated 3.6% increase over the next five years, peaking in 2027.

This alarming forecast comes from the latest Africa’s Pulse report, unveiled during the IMF and World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington, DC.

Despite recent growth in Nigeria’s non-oil sector in late 2024, the report highlights persistent challenges—including heavy resource dependence and national instability—that threaten to reverse progress. Unlike non-resource-rich African nations, which are making strides in poverty reduction, oil-dependent economies like Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo face worsening conditions.

“Poverty in fragile, resource-rich countries is projected to climb by 3.6 percentage points between 2022 and 2027,”* the report states.

The region remains the epicenter of extreme poverty, hosting **80% of the world’s 695 million poorest people** in 2024. Shockingly, half of Sub-Saharan Africa’s 560 million extreme poor live in just four nations—Nigeria likely among them. In contrast, poverty rates are far lower in South Asia (8%), East Asia (2%), the Middle East (5%), and Latin America (3%).

Slumping oil prices and weak fiscal policies are stifling progress in countries like Nigeria. Meanwhile, non-resource-rich nations are capitalizing on high agricultural commodity prices, driving faster economic growth despite budget constraints.

“Fragile, oil-dependent economies have poverty rates averaging 46%—13% higher than stable resource-rich countries,” the report reveals.

To combat this crisis, the World Bank urges Nigeria to strengthen fiscal management and foster inclusive economic policies. Without decisive action, millions more could slip into extreme poverty by 2027.

Will Nigeria turn the tide—or will poverty keep rising? Stay informed as the story develops.

Senate Leader Reveals Plans for State Police to Tackle Insecurity

Bandits

The Nigerian Senate has announced plans to draft legislation for the creation of state police as a key strategy to combat rising insecurity, including banditry and kidnapping.

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, emphasizing that the National Assembly is developing legal frameworks to empower states in addressing security challenges.

“We urge security agencies to work together as a team to track and apprehend all the masterminds and sponsors of terror attacks nationwide,” said Mr. Bamidele.

He also called on political leaders to avoid divisive rhetoric, stating:  “Some political actors who always lash out at the country’s challenges to push divisive narratives should learn from the example of Jesus Christ. Such actors are no longer playing opposition politics but simply taking advantage of the country’s internal conditions for their own parochial political outcomes.”

A State Police Bill, initially sponsored by former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu (PDP, Enugu), was first introduced in 2018 but failed to pass. The bill seeks to establish: Federal and state police forces, National Police Service Commission and State Police Service Commission.

Mr. Bamidele also urged Nigerians to embrace unity, especially in light of recent violence in Benue and Plateau states: “The recent killings outright negated the virtues of peace and love that Jesus Christ taught. No country develops as a result of one section rising up against another."

He encouraged leaders to shun divisive agendas and work towards a stronger, more secure Nigeria.

2025 Chairmanship: Badagry West Youths Launches ‘Foot Soldiers’ in Grand Show of Support for Rikay

2025 Chairmanship: Badagry West Youths Launches ‘Foot Soldiers’ in Grand Show of Support for Rikay

 By: Manoah Kikekon

The youth of Badagry West LCDA, under the Gbenu Youth Movement, have launched a formidable group of "Foot Soldiers" to demonstrate their unwavering support for Hon. Ibrahim Yemaren Rikay, a leading chairmanship aspirant in the upcoming local government elections.

The declaration and inauguration of the Foot Soldiers took place on Saturday at Suntan Beach, Badagry, drawing a massive crowd of enthusiastic youths and community stakeholders.

Addressing supporters, Rikay (as he is popularly known) expressed gratitude for the overwhelming endorsement, stating:

"It is God who decides who emerges. When I heard I was the chosen candidate, I didn’t know how to thank Him. Some say it’s about zoning, but others argue that’s not the case—if zoning existed, it should have been documented."

"One lesson I’ve learned is not to scrutinize everything your leader does—because one day, you’ll be in that position too. Sincerity matters in leadership. If we had caused division in Badagry West, the current chairman wouldn’t have achieved his successes. Thankfully, we stood by him."

Sunday Aladeotan, Convener of the Gbenu Youth Movement, praised the current administration under Hon. Gbenu Henugbe for its youth-friendly policies:

"Hon. Gbenu has performed exceptionally—80% of his political appointees are young people, including supervisors. His government has truly paved the way for youth inclusion. We commend his developmental programs and urge continued support for progressive leadership."

He also called for peaceful campaigning, urging youths to reject political thuggery, bullying, and criminality:

"We must campaign with love and unity. Politics should not divide us—we are one community."

Agnes Zosu, a participant at the event, declared: "Rikay is our choice in Badagry West! He’s experienced, principled, and generous—a true leader who supports women and the party. If you’re not close to him, you won’t understand his selfless nature."

With the Foot Soldiers now mobilized, Rikay’s campaign gains momentum as Badagry West LCDA anticipates a highly competitive election. Supporters believe his grassroots connection and track record make him the ideal candidate to lead the council.

Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour Reveals Royal Ties to Badagry

Former Lagos LP Governorship Candidate Shares Ancestral Connection to Badagry’s Storied Monarchy

Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the former Lagos State Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate, has unveiled his family ties to the Akran of Badagry, one of Nigeria’s most historic kingdoms.

Speaking on his deep connection to Badagry, Rhodes-Vivour noted, “Badagry holds a special place in my heart—firstly because of family ties. Late Emilinda De Branco was married to the late Oba Claudius Dosa-Akran. The Branco, Akran, and Branco-Rhodes families were first cousins.” He also praised the warmth of Badagry’s people and the town’s rich cultural beauty.

Delving into history, Rhodes-Vivour highlighted the significance of the Obalefun title, rooted in Yoruba tradition and Ifá spirituality. Etymologically, “Obalefun” translates to “The Ambassador for Peace.”

According to Ifá scripture, the title traces back to Orunmila, the Yoruba deity of wisdom, who established it with the verse:

“Orí adẹ́tù / A bìwà pẹ̀lẹ́ / A difa fún Orunmila / To n bá wọn ṣe àwo Obalefun.”

Translation:  “One born with greatness, / The peaceful being, / Divinated for Orunmila / That is to be crowned as Obalefun.”

Rhodes-Vivour’s acknowledgment of his Badagry lineage reinforces the intertwining of Nigeria’s political and traditional institutions. It also sheds light on Badagry’s historical significance as a hub of Yoruba heritage, colonialism, and the transatlantic slave trade.

As Nigeria’s political figures increasingly embrace their ancestral roots, Rhodes-Vivour’s revelation adds a royal dimension to his public profile—proving that in Lagos, history and modernity walk hand in hand.

Badagry, Lagos – In a heartfelt gesture of generosity, Hon. Mobolaji Ogunlende, Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development and founder of the Real Act of Kindness (RAK) Foundation, distributed 500 bags of garri and 500 bags of beans to vulnerable households in Badagry, estimated to feed about 15,000 persons.

The food distribution event, held on Thursday, was part of Ogunlende’s post-birthday charity initiative, a tradition he has upheld for years.

Speaking at the event, Ogunlende emphasized his commitment to giving back to society, particularly to women, whom he described as the "bedrock of the family."

"I enjoy interacting with women when it comes to community support because they understand the needs of the vulnerable," he said. "This is my way of ensuring they are not forgotten."

The commissioner, who also serves as Patron of the Badagry Development Women Forum, explained that the food items were distributed through 13 different groups, iincluding Market women, religious groups, Igbo women group, Housa women group, APC party structure and others, to ensure they reached those most in need.

Ogunlende highlighted the efforts of the Ministry of Youth and Social Development in addressing societal needs but stressed that community involvement is crucial.

"The ministry may not reach every home, but if we unite as a people—through mentorship and collective support—we can build stronger communities," he said.

Mrs. Atoyebi Olayinka, Badagry LGA Woman Leader, praised Ogunlende’s consistency in supporting the less privileged.

"He always considers us, especially in these tough times when food is a major challenge," she said. "This gesture will go a long way in alleviating hunger."

Mrs. Sewede Port-Balogun, Supervisor for Education in Badagry LGA, recalled that this was not the first time the commissioner had extended such support.

"Last time, he empowered 150 women traders with cash," she noted. "With hunger biting harder, this food distribution is timely. When people have food, the economy feels a little lighter."

While commending Ogunlende’s efforts, the women leaders urged more initiatives to combat poverty and encouraged women to remain resilient in securing their households.

This initiative reinforces the Lagos State government’s commitment to social welfare and grassroots development, proving that kindness and collective effort can make a real difference.

Peter Obi to Tinubu: 'Cut France Trip Short, Return Home Now – Nigeria is Burning

By: Manoah Kikekon

Peter Obi and Bola Tinubu

Labour Party’s Peter Obihas issued a strong demand to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to immediately abandon his trip to France and return to Nigeria to tackle the escalating security crisis and economic turmoil gripping the nation.

In a hard-hitting statement on his verified X (Twitter) account, Obi expressed deep concern over Nigeria’s worsening violence, citing over 150 deaths in just two weeks—particularly in Plateau, Zamfara, Borno, and the South East.

"I call on our President to suspend his foreign retreat and return home to address Nigeria’s overwhelming security challenges," Obi declared. "The bloodshed and lawlessness demand leadership, not absence."

Obi highlighted multiple pipeline explosions in the Niger Delta, a resurgence of Boko Haram attacks in Borno, and daily kidnappings and killings nationwide. He criticized Tinubu’s decision to remain abroad while Nigeria faces unprecedented instability.

"While the President enjoys peace in France, Nigerians are burying their loved ones," Obi stated. "A true leader does not retreat when his people are under siege."

Emphasizing that security is government’s foremost responsibility, Obi questioned the logic of Tinubu’s extended stay abroad amid rising terror and economic hardship.

"The fight for Nigeria isn’t about individuals—it’s about policies that protect and uplift citizens," he asserted. "President Tinubu must return immediately and take decisive action."

Obi’s outcry reflects mounting frustration among Nigerians, who see the federal government’s approach to insecurity as slow and ineffective. With no end in sight to the violence, pressure is building on Tinubu to prioritize Nigeria over foreign engagements.
