LASG Rejects JAMB’s 150 Cut-Off, Sets 185 Minimum for State Universities

LASG Rejects JAMB’s 150 Cut-Off, Sets 185 Minimum for State Universities

By: Manoah Kikekon

Babajide Sanwo-Olu and JAMB

The Lagos State Government has officially drawn a line in the sand regarding academic standards, announcing that candidates who scored below 185 in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) will not be considered for admission into any of its three state-owned universities.

This decision directly challenges the recent minimum benchmark of 150 set by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

Speaking on Wednesday during a ministerial press briefing at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule, made it clear that Lagos State would not compromise on quality. The briefing, held to mark the third anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term, served as a platform for the state to reaffirm its commitment to educational excellence.

“To us in Lagos State, the cut-off marks approved by JAMB look too low for our universities. None of our three universities is admitting any student who scored below 185 in the UTME,” Sule stated.

The Commissioner expressed concern that the national minimum of 150 out of a total of 400 obtainable marks undermines the competitive nature of higher education in a leading state like Lagos. He argued that the state's academic ecosystem should not be equated with regions that require lower bars to encourage enrollment.

“For JAMB to announce 150 as the cut-off mark... is very low. Lagos cannot be considered educationally disadvantaged to the extent of bringing its cut-off mark down to meet what Sokoto or Zamfara states require,” he added.

Despite the stricter entry requirements, the Sanwo-Olu administration has been aggressive in expanding the capacity of its tertiary institutions. Within the last three years, the number of state-run universities has grown from one to three, with a fourth institution already in the pipeline.

The Commissioner emphasized that while the government wants to provide more platforms for residents to obtain degrees, it will not do so by lowering the bar. He noted that the state is focusing on infrastructure investment and capacity building rather than "watering down" admission criteria.

In a move to further boost the state's human capital, Sule revealed that the Ministry of Tertiary Education is currently collaborating with the Ministry of Health on legislation for a new University of Medicine and Health Sciences.

“Increasing our universities... is still part of what the state governor is doing to provide more educational platforms and opportunities for Lagos residents,” Sule explained.

Nigeria Troops Intercept 400 Starlink Devices in Major North-East Crackdown

Nigeria Troops Intercept 400 Starlink Devices in Major North-East Crackdown

By: Manoah Kikekon

MAIDUGURI, NIGERIA – In a significant blow to the communication infrastructure of insurgent groups, Nigerian troops have intercepted and seized over 400 Starlink satellite internet terminals used by Boko Haram and ISWAP terrorists.

The recovery is part of a massive "strangulation operation" aimed at severing the technological and logistics lifelines of militants across the North-East.

Brigadier-General Beyidi Martins, the Commander of Sector 2, Operation HADIN KAI, disclosed the breakthrough during a briefing with defence correspondents on Wednesday, 13th May 2026. He revealed that the devices, linked to Elon Musk's satellite internet service, were recovered from high-risk zones, including the Sambisa Forest and the Timbuktu Triangle.

The seizure of high-speed satellite terminals highlights a shifting battlefield where terrorists increasingly rely on advanced technology for coordination. By utilizing Starlink, insurgents had been able to maintain secure, high-speed communication in remote enclaves where traditional cellular networks are non-existent.

“The lifeblood of terrorist activities is logistics resupply, and we are deliberately denying them freedom to move supplies, communication equipment, fuel, and other operational items across the theatre,” Brig.-Gen. Martins stated.

The commander noted that by intercepting these gadgets, the military is effectively blinding the enemy’s command and control structure.

Brig.-Gen. Martins raised concerns regarding the role of civilian collaborators who assist in smuggling these high-tech devices and other essential supplies into terrorist hideouts. He explained that while some residents are coerced into helping through threats, others do so voluntarily for financial gain.

> “There is a high level of collusion between some members of the civil populace and the terrorists. Some do it willingly, while others are forced through threats and coercion,” he revealed.

To counter this, troops have successfully infiltrated various transport and trade syndicates. This intelligence-led approach has led to the daily arrest of couriers and the disruption of over **400 logistics-related cases involving drugs, fuel (PMS), and motorcycle spare parts.

Beyond technology, the military is targeting the insurgents' financial engines. The North-East command has partnered with local market stakeholders to introduce strict livestock verification measures. This prevents terrorists from selling rustled cattle in local markets to fund their operations.

“If animals are not properly identified, they will not be sold. Through that arrangement, we are tracking and disrupting their sources of financing,” the Commander added.

The "strangulation" strategy combining the seizure of communication tech with the blocking of food and fuel corridors stretching from Kano through Nguru is yielding results. The military reports that the sustained pressure has led to a rise in the surrender of terrorists and their families, who can no longer survive the harsh conditions in the shrinking enclaves.

How ONSA Arrested Seme Customs Boss Adenuga Over 'Secret' Smuggling Gate

How ONSA Arrested Seme Customs Boss Adenuga Over 'Secret' Smuggling Gate

By: Manoah Kikekon

The landscape of Nigeria’s border security has been rocked by a high-profile scandal involving the alleged creation of an unauthorized entry point at the Seme border. SaharaReporters has revealed that the former Controller of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Seme Area Command, Comptroller Wale Adenuga, was arrested following a daring operation that bypassed international border protocols.

According to top security and Customs sources, the breach involved the physical destruction of a section of the international border fence that separates Nigeria and the Republic of Benin. This operation, allegedly carried out under the cover of darkness between 12:30 am and 4:30 am, saw the installation of a massive iron gate just 250 meters from the Customs Area Controller’s main office.

The secret corridor was reportedly used for a frantic 48-hour smuggling spree. SaharaReporters obtained video evidence showing a large gate surrounded by vehicles and contraband. Subsequent footage shows the gate had been hurriedly dismantled and the breach sealed with concrete blocks after whistleblowers raised the alarm.

Sources close to the investigation by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) allege that the scale of the illegality was staggering. The following items were reportedly moved through the illegal gate:

Over 10,000 foreign vehicles, including brand-new and used SUVs. Thousands of bags of prohibited foreign rice..Large quantities of various contraband items.

Insiders identified Mr. Ope Oloko, described as a "notorious smuggler," as the daily supervisor of the operation. It is alleged that billions of naira in potential federal revenue from customs duties were diverted into approximately 15 private bank accounts linked to the scheme.

The scandal has sent ripples through the leadership of the Nigeria Customs Service. During interrogation, sources claim Comptroller Adenuga alleged that his activities were known to the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, and the Zonal Coordinator of Zone A.

“Wale Adenuga was doing all these illegal acts with the knowledge of his Zonal Coordinator... This may be one of the reasons he was quickly removed before he could spill more details,” an anonymous source told SaharaReporters.

March 26, 2026: Adenuga was removed from Seme and posted to the Customs Headquarters in Abuja as Comptroller in charge of Human Resources Development (HRD).

Current Status: Reports indicate that despite his new posting, Adenuga has yet to resume duties at the HRD department as he remains under investigation.

When reached for comment, the National Public Relations Officer of the NCS, Abdullahi Aliyu Maiwada, confirmed the administrative changes but remained cautious regarding the smuggling allegations.

"All I know is that we do have routine administrative rotations... where there is a need to rejig officers holding strategic commands," Maiwada stated. He confirmed Adenuga’s removal from Seme but noted he had not been formally briefed on the specific allegations regarding the illegal gate.

As the ONSA continues its probe, the case stands as a significant test for the Nigerian government’s commitment to border integrity and the "Renewed Hope" agenda’s stance against high-level corruption.

KIGALI, RWANDA – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu arrived in the Rwandan capital, Kigali, on Wednesday, 13th May 2026, ahead of the prestigious 13th Africa CEO Forum. The President was received with full military honours at the Kigali International Airport, marking a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s ongoing diplomatic and economic outreach across the continent.

The 2026 forum, co-hosted by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Jeune Afrique Media Group, is themed "Scale or Fail: Why Africa Must Embrace Shared Ownership." This year’s gathering is expected to draw over 2,000 global CEOs, investors, and policymakers to the Kigali Convention Centre to discuss regional integration and the necessity of building "transnational African champions."

In a statement released by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, it was noted that the forum has become the premier platform for private sector leadership on the continent.

“Founded in 2012, the forum has become the largest annual gathering of African private sector leaders, investors, and policymakers, focusing on accelerating economic transformation through shared scale and cross-border investment,” the statement read.

A major highlight of the President’s itinerary is his scheduled keynote address titled “Holding the Line: Nigeria’s Reform Bet in a Fractured World.” This presentation is expected to showcase the gains of Nigeria’s bold economic policies including foreign exchange unification and subsidy reforms positioning the nation as a resilient investment destination.

Beyond the plenary sessions, President Tinubu is set to hold a series of high-level bilateral meetings aimed at fostering strategic partnerships.

“President Tinubu will use the occasion of the summit to reaffirm Nigeria’s commitment to advancing African unity, deepening regional economic cooperation, and fostering strategic partnerships to accelerate private sector-driven sustainable development,” Onanuga added.

The visit to Kigali is part of an intensive diplomatic circuit for the President, who recently concluded engagements at the Africa Forward Summit (formerly Africa–France Summit) in Nairobi, Kenya. NSA Ribadu Allegedly Orders Media Blackout on Boko Haram Attacks Until 2027

NSA Ribadu Allegedly Orders Media Blackout on Boko Haram Attacks Until 2027

 By: Manoah Kikekon

Nuhu Ribadu

ABUJA, Nigeria — In a move sparking concerns over transparency and democratic accountability, fresh reports suggest a coordinated effort by the Nigerian presidency to suppress information regarding the nation's security crisis. Sources indicate that National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu has allegedly directed military commanders to conceal all successful Boko Haram and ISWAP attacks from the public eye until after the 2027 general elections.

According to an exclusive report by SaharaReporters, this directive followed a massive security breach in Yobe State, where at least 36 security personnel, including soldiers and Mobile Police officers, were killed in coordinated insurgent strikes. The publication of these casualties reportedly triggered "extreme anger" within the Office of the National Security Adviser, prompting an immediate crackdown on information flow.

The controversy stems from a deadly midnight assault on Thursday into Friday, targeting the Theatre Training Centre in Buniyadi and the 27 Task Force Brigade in Buni Gari. These locations, situated in the hometown of Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni, became the site of one of the deadliest military losses in recent months.

Military insiders revealed to SaharaReporters that the breakdown of casualties was devastating: 17 Mobile Police officers killed during training. 10 soldiers attached to the training program lost. 9 additional soldiers killed in the 27 Task Force Brigade assault.

"The commander received a call immediately after the story was published, and it came from the NSA’s office," a military source told the outlet. The primary grievance was not the loss of life, but the speed at which the information reached the press.

The alleged directive from the NSA’s office highlights a strategic shift toward "reputation management" over public safety. Sources claim military commanders were explicitly told that operational failures and successful insurgent raids must be "managed internally" to avoid damaging the image of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

The instruction allegedly given was clear: information regarding Boko Haram or ISWAP victories must not reach the public domain for the next three years. This policy aims to project an aura of total victory over terrorism as the 2027 election cycle approaches, despite the reality on the ground.

To ensure this blackout remains effective, the military hierarchy has reportedly begun a hunt for whistleblowers within the ranks. Soldiers suspected of communicating with journalists now face threats of "severe punishment" and potential framing.

“People are scared because they believe they can be framed or targeted at any time,” a source told SaharaReporters, describing a climate of fear where soldiers feel silenced while their colleagues fall on the front lines.

Despite claims by the Nigerian government that terrorism has been "largely contained," these latest developments suggest a widening gap between official narratives and the lived experience of troops in the North-East. The push for secrecy raises critical questions about whether the safety of Nigerian citizens is being traded for political optics.

ABUJA, NIGERIA – The race for the Alausa Government House has reached a critical milestone as Dr. Samuel Mawuyon Ajose (SMA), a prominent governorship aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC), has been officially cleared to participate in the party’s upcoming primaries.

The express clearance followed a rigorous screening exercise conducted by the APC National Screening Committee in Abuja on Sunday, May 10, 2026. Party insiders described Dr. Ajose’s performance as "outstanding," solidifying his standing as a top-tier contender for the May 21 primaries.

The screening venue was a sea of supporters as Dr. Ajose arrived with a high-powered delegation. The entourage, which showcased the aspirant's deep grassroots reach, included revered traditional rulers, religious leaders, and political stalwarts, particularly from the Badagry Division.

The successful clearance has ignited widespread celebrations across Lagos State, with supporters viewing it as a victory against the perceived "consensus" arrangements that have dominated recent political headlines in the state.

Addressing the press moments after receiving his clearance certificate, a visibly confident Dr. Ajose expressed his gratitude to the party leadership and his dedicated followers.

“I am deeply humbled by the confidence reposed in me by the party and by the massive show of solidarity from our leaders and the people of Badagry and beyond,” Dr. Ajose stated.

“This is not just a personal victory; it is a victory for every Lagosian who yearns for inclusive, compassionate, and transformational governance. We move forward, against all odds, towards the primaries with faith and determination.”

The SMA Media Team further bolstered this sentiment, describing the clearance as a “cheering confirmation of Dr. Ajose’s impeccable credentials and unwavering commitment to the progress of Lagos State.”

With Dr. Ajose now officially in the race, the Lagos APC Governorship Primaries scheduled for May 21, 2026, are set to be highly competitive. While some party blocs have hinted at consensus candidates, Dr. Ajose’s decision to move forward signals a demand for internal democracy and a direct choice for party delegates.

NAIP Boss Urges FG to Transform Nigeria into Africa’s Pharma Hub

NAIP Boss Urges FG to Transform Nigeria into Africa’s Pharma Hub

Pharm. (Sir) Bankole Ezebuilo

ILORIN, NIGERIA – The National Chairman of the Association of Industrial Pharmacists of Nigeria (NAIP), Pharm. (Sir) Bankole Ezebuilo, has issued a Clarion call to the Federal Government to declare a national emergency on local pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Speaking at the 29th Annual National Conference and Training of NAIP in Ilorin, Kwara State, Ezebuilo warned that Nigeria’s current reliance on imported medicines is a direct threat to national security.

The conference, themed "Collaboration and Innovation to Build Local Solutions for the Future of Nigeria’s Pharmaceutical Industry," brought together a high-powered assembly of regulators, manufacturers, and policymakers to chart a course for pharmaceutical sovereignty.

Addressing the stakeholders, Ezebuilo highlighted a staggering statistic: Nigeria currently imports over 70 percent of its medicines and nearly all of its Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs). This dependency, he argued, leaves the nation vulnerable to global supply chain shocks and currency volatility.

"No nation can outsource its health security," Ezebuilo declared. "A nation that cannot produce its own medicines is a nation negotiating with its health, and negotiation is not where you want to be when lives are at stake."

He urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to implement aggressive policies that would transition Nigeria from a consumer nation to the definitive pharmaceutical manufacturing hub for the African continent.

Ezebuilo emphasized that the journey toward self-sufficiency requires more than just infrastructure; it requires a radical shift in technical competence and institutional collaboration. He challenged the sector to move beyond theoretical discussions toward measurable industrial outcomes.

"The best way to predict the future is to create it," he said, quoting a famous leadership principle. "To build local solutions, we must stop importing not just medicines, but also ideas."

The NAIP Chairman assured the government that industrial pharmacists are trained and ready to lead this "pharmaceutical industrial revolution," provided the enabling environment including access to forex and stable power is secured.

In a significant demonstration of the association's commitment to grassroots welfare, the conference featured a massive humanitarian outreach. Ezebuilo commissioned the renovation of healthcare centres worth millions of naira at the Palace of the Emir of Ilorin.

Supported by the Kwara State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Amina L. Imam, the NAIP "Speaking Humanity with Passion" initiative provided:.Free Medical Consultations: For over 1,000 residents of Ilorin and surrounding rural communities. Specialized Interventions: Expert care and free drug distribution for indigent patients. Grassroots Strengthening: Direct investment in local primary healthcare facilities.

The event featured a keynote address by US-based pharmaceutical executive Dr. Henrietta N. Ukwu and was attended by a "who’s who" of the profession, including past PSN presidents Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa and Pharm. Olumide Akintayo, as well as the Registrar of the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria, Pharm. Ibrahim Babashehu Ahmed.

Representing the Kwara State Government were several cabinet members, including the Commissioner for Finance, Dr. Hauwa Nuru, signaling strong state-level support for industrial pharmaceutical growth.

Onigbanko of Igbanko Kingdom Disowns Suspected Drug Trafficker Intercepted on Seme Expressway

BADAGRY, LAGOS — In a swift and decisive reaction to a burgeoning scandal, the Onigbanko of Igbanko Land, HRM Oba Sheriff Adeshina Bello, has officially dissociated himself and his traditional cabinet from a suspect intercepted with illicit drugs along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

The disclaimer follows the circulation of a viral video showing one Mr. Ogabi Olubukola Joseph in the custody of law enforcement agents. In the footage, the suspect reportedly identified himself as the Baale of Mushin-Gbanko, a title the monarch insists is entirely fraudulent and unrecognized within his domain.

In a formal statement released on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, the Onigbanko clarified that the suspect has no official or personal ties to the palace or the community's leadership structure.

Vedio of the suspect

"I wish to announce to the general public and disassociate myself and the entire Onigbanko Cabinet from the video currently making the rounds involving one Ogabi Olubukola Joseph," the monarch stated. "The said self-acclaimed Baale is neither known to Onigbanko nor has any personal or official dealing with him."

Oba Bello further emphasized that his throne stands for discipline and the rule of law, maintaining that his administration has zero tolerance for criminal activities.

"The Onigbanko states categorically that he is a law-abiding citizen. His cabinet does not condone drug trafficking or harbour drug barons. The public is enjoined never to associate Mr. Ogabi Olubukola Joseph with Onigbanko."

While the traditional institution moves to protect its integrity, the incident has highlighted a brewing procedural row between the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Sources within the NDLEA revealed to News Peddlers that while the suspect was intercepted by Customs officers of Seme Command at Agbara earlier this week, a formal handover of the suspect, the vehicle, and the full quantity of seized drugs has yet to occur.

"Nigeria Customs Service has not officially handed over the suspect to the NDLEA," a source disclosed.

"In the past, there have been cases where proper handing over isn't done. They may release the suspect and the vehicle after some time and only hand over a portion of the drugs, which is not proper and hinders our ability to investigate the wider network."

The NDLEA source stressed that the delay in transferring the case file impacts the agency's ability to track down other members of the drug syndicate.

"If every suspect and exhibit is handed over to NDLEA in time, it will help us investigate and arrest other people involved. That is our job," the source added.

IKEJA, LAGOS — The political landscape in Lagos State witnessed a massive shift on Sunday as Dr. Samuel Mawuyon Ajose, leader of the SMA Movement, mobilized thousands of executives for a high-powered statewide General Assembly in Ikeja.

The gathering, which featured a sea of coordinators from all 57 LGA/LCDAs and 376 wards, served as a dual-purpose strategic launch: solidifying grassroots support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 re-election and formalizing Dr. Ajose’s bid for the Lagos State governorship.

Addressing the sea of executives, Dr. Ajose emphasized that the movement is built on a foundation of absolute loyalty to the All Progressives Congress (APC). He urged his lieutenants to return to their respective wards and intensify canvassing efforts immediately.

“We are in this game to win. As we are winning for Mr. President, we are also winning for SMA,” Ajose declared to a cheering crowd. “What you see here today is just the leadership core. When we mobilize the full strength of our supporters across the state, the world will know the SMA Movement is ready.”

In a move that resonated deeply with supporters from Lagos West, Dr. Ajose framed his governorship ambition as a matter of historical fairness. He pointed out that since the creation of Lagos State in 1967, the Badagry Division has yet to produce a Governor.

Drawing a parallel to President Tinubu’s famous "Emi Lokan" (It is my turn) declaration ahead of the 2023 primaries, Ajose asserted that Badagry is now ready to take its place at the helm of the state's affairs.

“We are making a declaration today that it is the turn of Badagry,” he stated. “We have the capacity, we have the numbers, and we have the loyalty to the party to deliver strong electoral results.”

Despite the bold "Badagry First" stance, Dr. Ajose remained firm on his commitment to party supremacy. He assured the assembly that while he is confident of securing the APC ticket, the movement remains a disciplined wing of the party.

Ward leaders were instructed to begin door-to-door engagement. The SMA Movement has successfully mirrored the state's political map to ensure total coverage. The movement reiterated that its primary goal is to ensure President Tinubu returns to Aso Rock with a landslide victory in Lagos.

Ogu General Assembly Celebrates the Akran as Global King of the Ogu Race

Ogu General Assembly Celebrates the Akran as Global King of the Ogu Race

BADAGRY, LAGOS — In a vibrant display of cultural pride and ethnic solidarity, the Ogu General Assembly (OGA) hosted a spectacular independent celebration to honor the life and legacy of the late Akran of Badagry, Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I.

While the Lagos State Government coordinated official funeral rites on Saturday, May 2, 2026, the OGA distinguished itself by organizing a separate, high-energy tribute at Badagry Grammar School.

The event featured a headline performance by Ogu music maestro, Joel Yetonyon, whose rhythms drew hundreds of Ogu indigenes from across Nigeria and the Diaspora.

For the Ogu General Assembly, the transition of the Akran is not merely a loss but a "divine passage" of a leader who prioritized the advancement of his people above all else.

Prof. Jendele Hungbo, the Convener of the Ogu General Assembly, emphasized that the celebration was a necessary reciprocation of the love the monarch showered on his subjects throughout his nearly five-decade reign.

"We believe that the transition of the Akran is divine. For the love he had for his people, we have to reciprocate that love," Prof. Hungbo stated. "This is a monarch who brought immense development to the Ogu people in Nigeria and abroad. We must emulate his commitment to peace, unity, and the preservation of our rich cultural heritage."

The OGA’s celebration was rooted in the philosophy that the Akran’s influence extended far beyond the geographic boundaries of Badagry. To the Ogu race, he was the ultimate symbol of their identity.

Dr. Tony Dansu, Chairman of the OGA Burial Committee for the Akran, noted that the group felt it was vital to honor the monarch in a way that reflected the specific traditions of the Ogu people.

"To OGA, the Akran is not just the King of Badagry, but the King of all Ogu people in Nigeria and the Diaspora," Dr. Dansu remarked. "In his transition, there is a need for us to celebrate him in our own way. He was a symbol of unity for the Ogu race. From his coronation in 1977 until his passing in 2026, we witnessed unprecedented growth in human capacity and infrastructure."

The assembly highlighted the "Golden Age" of Badagry under the late Akran, noting that his reign transformed the ancient city into a hub of educational and cultural advancement. The OGA leadership urged the next generation to protect the gains made under his leadership.

"We hope that after him, we will have someone who will do even more," Dr. Dansu added. "The Ogu people must continue to value our culture, promote unity, and support one another to keep his legacy alive."

As the sounds of Joel Yetonyon’s music echoed across the venue, the message from the Ogu General Assembly was clear: the Akran may have transitioned, but his role as the unifying force of the Ogu people remains eternal.

The 10-day rites of passage, chaired by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, blended solemn religious services with the vibrant, ancient customs of the Ogu people.

Royal Honors includs Ceremonial gun salutes across the kingdom's quarters and the sacred Iwure rites. The Ajogan Parade: A colorful display of royal heritage that captivated residents and tourists. Community Impact: A novelty football match, medical outreaches at the Akran Palace, and the Akran Legacy Festival.

At the grand reception, the venue was a sea of purple and white aso-ebi, as dignitaries including the Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, and business mogul Samuel Ajose mingled with first-class monarchs from across Nigeria and the Republic of Benin.

This ancient performance will bring the formal farewell customs to a dignified close, marking the final spiritual journey of the monarch according to the deep-rooted traditions of the Badagry Kingdom.

Aholu Menu-Toyi I the Akran of Badagry Kingdom

BADAGRY, LAGOS — Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has called on the residents of the ancient city of Badagry to protect and sustain the indelible legacy of the late Oba De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I, the Akran of Badagry.

The Governor made this appeal on Saturday, May 2, 2026, during a grand funeral thanksgiving service held at the Freeman Memorial Methodist Cathedral. The event, which drew a massive crowd of mourners and dignitaries, marked the final religious rites for the monarch whose reign spanned nearly five decades.

Describing the late Akran as a "constant and unshakeable figure of unity," Governor Sanwo-Olu noted that the monarch’s 48-year reign was characterized by justice, fairness, and an open-door policy.

"He was not a man who spoke often, but when he spoke, the room listened," Sanwo-Olu remarked. "His was the wisdom of long years and long service patient, generous, and incorruptible. The best tribute you can offer the Akran is to continue his work, preserve the monuments, and uphold the traditions of this ancient land."

The Governor was accompanied by his deputy, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, Secretary to the State Government Mrs. Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, and a host of traditional rulers and political leaders from across the state.

In a move to immortalize the late King’s commitment to heritage, Governor Sanwo-Olu performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I Cultural Park shortly after the church service.

The park is envisioned as a hub for cultural preservation, ensuring that the history of one of Nigeria’s most storied kingdoms remains accessible to future generations. The Governor urged the royal family and the palace council to see the project as a symbol of the "covenant of this ancient land."

The sermon, delivered by Prelate Emeritus Sunday Ola Makinde of the Methodist Church Nigeria, centered on the theme, "How are you preparing for your eternity?" The cleric lauded the late Oba for his hospitality and deep love for the people of Badagry.

"We have not lost a king; we have lost a father," Makinde echoed the sentiments of the locals. "The Akran’s life was a testament to service to God until death."

The Prelate commended the Sanwo-Olu administration for its "Red and Blue" rail projects and the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

He urged President Bola Tinubu to ignore critics and proceed with the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, describing it as a "necessary and commendable" project for national integration.

Oba De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi I was the longest-reigning traditional ruler in Lagos State’s modern history. Before ascending the throne, he was a distinguished teacher and journalist backgrounds that the Governor noted contributed to his measured and statesman-like leadership.
