Ibrahim Hashimu, a middle-aged man from Bauchi state's Warji Local Government Area, was beaten to death by four people for stealing a watermelon worth 2,000 naira (2000).

According to preliminary investigations, the victim, Mr Hashimu, went into the farm and stole 7 pieces of watermelon.

His luck ran out when he was apprehended by the farm owner, who beat him to a pulp with the help of three others.

As police began their investigation into the murder, the four suspects were arrested.

Aminu Alhassan, the Bauchi state commissioner of police, frowned on the suspects' actions, saying that instead of reporting the case for proper investigation and prosecution, they took the law into their own hands.

He ordered that the case be transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Bauchi for a discreet investigation and assured the public that justice would be served.
