Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal Government has officially withdrawn the registration certificate of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN). The announcement was made public on October 7, 2025, via a press release signed by Omolara Esan, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Youth Development.

This decisive action follows an official communication from the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), signalling a major intervention in the affairs of the nation's premier youth body.

The Federal Ministry of Youth Development confirmed that it received a correspondence from the CAC dated October 6, 2025, notifying it of the withdrawal of the certificate initially issued to the NYCN on October 28, 2020. The Corporate Affairs Commission invoked its powers under Sections 8(1)(c) and 8(1)(d) of the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA), 2020. This decision was the culmination of a comprehensive investigation into the Council, which has been embroiled in a protracted and divisive leadership crisis for nearly two decades, undermining its credibility and effectiveness.

According to the CAC's findings, a detailed review of the NYCN's records uncovered serial and flagrant violations of both its own constitution and the governing provisions of CAMA 2020, specifically Sections 833 and 834. Due to these severe infractions and the entrenched governance failures, the Commission has taken the unprecedented step of de-recognizing all existing claims to leadership, trusteeship, and management within the organization. This effectively nullifies all factions and positions, clearing the deck for a complete restructuring.

To steer the Council back to stability, the CAC has established an Interim Management Committee (IMC) to oversee its affairs for a period of one year, effective from October 6, 2025. The Federal Ministry of Youth Development, acknowledging the legal authority of the CAC, has thrown its weight behind this intervention. The Ministry, in its statement, urged all stakeholders, member organizations, and development partners to cooperate fully with the newly inaugurated committee to ensure a smooth and successful transition.

This radical intervention is positioned as a critical step towards restoring the institutional integrity and founding ideals of the NYCN. The Federal Ministry of Youth Development reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a stable, credible, and inclusive youth governance framework. The move aligns with the broader "Renewed Hope Agenda" of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration, emphasizing accountability, transparency, and a renewed focus on empowering the Nigerian youth for national development.
