Twelve retirees and three former employees of African Fertilizer and Chemical Nigeria Ltd (a subsidiary of African Industries Group) are crying out after being denied their gratuity and terminal benefits since May 2025.
Despite decades of loyal service, these elderly workers some in their 70s say they were shockingly told to "go and die" when they demanded their rightful entitlements.
The company, a major player in Nigeria’s manufacturing sector, produces acids, alum, iron pipes, and industrial glass under multiple brands, including AWAIL, CCRM, and ELITE GLASS.
Yet, while the business thrives, its retired workers are left in financial limbo. Sources reveal that those who retired in April 2025 were paid immediately, while those who left just a month later have been ignored despite repeated promises from management.
Former employees describe a distressing work environment where the Human Resources department appears powerless. Key decisions allegedly rest with Indian expatriates, leaving even senior Nigerian HR officials with no real authority.
"We gave everything to this company. Now they act like we never existed," said one retiree, fearing retaliation if identified.
Among the affected are senior citizens aged 65 and 73, some with 15 to 20 years of service. After risking their health in hazardous working conditions, they now face a different kind of danger financial ruin and emotional trauma.
"Working there was hard enough, but being treated like garbage after retirement is unforgivable," another retiree shared.
As at the time this News was gathered all attempts to reach the Human Resources head of the company Mr. Shaji Ashokan (an Indian national), was not successful.
