Badagry, Lagos – Hon. Babatunde Hunpe the Executive Chairman of Badagry Local Government, has said tourism is the cornerstone of the town’s identity and a vital engine for economic growth.
This was disclosed during a high-stakes stakeholders’ engagement meeting held at the council secretariat on Friday, where key players in the tourism sector converged to strategize on revitalizing the historic town’s appeal.
The meeting, which brought together government officials, private sector operators, and cultural custodians, focused on forging partnerships, harmonizing Badagry’s tourism calendar, and aligning policies with the community’s development goals.
Hunpe emphasized that sustainable progress would require collaboration across all sectors. “Tourism is not just about attractions, it’s about creating jobs, boosting local businesses, and putting Badagry back on the global map,” he stated.
Viyon Awhanse, CEO of the Badagry International Film and Sports Festival, praised the initiative while calling for more government support. Speaking exclusively to News Peddlers said, “The chairman has made a good start, but we need policies that sustain what the people have already built organically.

"Badagry needs a cultural center to coordinate tourism activities and a cleaner environment to enhance visitors’ experience. The government must act intentionally to attract the right attention,” Viyon said.
His remarks underscored the need for infrastructural upgrades and policy frameworks to drive long-term growth.
Babatunde Ajose, a seasoned tourism expert present at the meeting, described the engagement as a “very beautiful beginning.”

He added, “The chairman has started on a good note, but challenges will arise. His ability to make tough decisions beyond sentiments will determine success. We must support this initiative while holding the local government accountable.”
The Stakeholders lauded Hunpe for convening the meeting, noting that such engagements were long overdue. Participants proposed actionable strategies, including upgrading heritage sites, improving road access, and creating year-round cultural events to attract more visitors.
There was also a strong push for policies that preserve Badagry’s rich heritage while encouraging new investments. “We cannot afford to let our history fade; we must modernize without losing our roots,” one attendee remarked.
