The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has earned widespread praise from election observers for its seamless and peaceful conduct of the local government elections held across the state, despite pockets of low voter turnout in some areas.
Election monitors, including officials from other state electoral bodies, commended LASIEC for its efficient organization and transparent process. Jonathan Aifuobhokhan, Chairman of the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission, described the exercise as exemplary and hinted at adopting Lagos’ model for Edo’s upcoming polls.
“I am taking notes to replicate this success in Edo State,” Aifuobhokhan said. “The peace and order witnessed here are commendable. LASIEC has set a benchmark, and we will seek their expertise to improve our processes.”
Similarly, Chief Charles Ejiogu, Chairman of the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission, applauded LASIEC’s preparedness, calling it “fantastic.” He urged Lagos residents to participate more actively, emphasizing the smooth voting process.
Despite the peaceful atmosphere, observers noted sparse voter presence in areas like Mushin, Ilupeju, Coker-Aguda, and Surulere, with many polling units experiencing minimal activity by midday. Analysts attributed the trend to voter apathy and called for intensified civic education ahead of future elections.
As vote counting commenced, monitors affirmed that the elections were credible and well-managed, with no major incidents reported. LASIEC’s commitment to a fair process was evident, though stakeholders emphasized the need for improved voter mobilization strategies.
With Lagos once again demonstrating electoral efficiency, experts suggest that other states could learn from LASIEC’s approach to ensure smoother, more inclusive local government elections nationwide.
