A horrific accident claimed multiple lives on Friday night when a tipper truck reportedly suffered brake failure and plowed into pedestrians at Chisco Park Junction in Amichi, Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra.

Margaret Onabe, the spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra, confirmed the tragic incident to journalists on Saturday. She stated that the sector command was still gathering details but promised to provide updates as soon as more information became available.

Witnesses at the scene reported that the accident occurred around 9:30 p.m. when the driver of the tipper lost control due to brake failure. In a desperate attempt to maneuver, the truck veered off course, crashing into pedestrians, motorcyclists, and roadside traders.

“Several people were killed instantly. The victims had no chance to escape some were waiting to board vehicles, while others were just going about their night businesses,” an eyewitness recounted.

The incident was captured on Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV), showing the moment the out-of-control tipper slammed into unsuspecting victims, leaving many lifeless on the ground. Among the casualties were a young girl, commercial motorcyclists, and local traders.

This tragic accident has reignited concerns over road safety in Anambra, particularly regarding heavy-duty vehicles and brake failures. Residents are urging authorities to enforce stricter regulations on truck maintenance and driver training to prevent future disasters.
