ActionAid Nigeria (AAN) has issued a strong appeal to governments at all levels to fulfill long-overdue infrastructure promises to neglected rural communities. The call comes amid growing frustration over abandoned projects and unmet electoral pledges, leaving millions without basic amenities.
During a working visit to Tungan Ashere community in Abuja, Rabi Isma, Chairperson of the AAN Board, condemned the government’s failure to deliver essential services such as electricity, schools, health centres, and access roads.
“Government officials erect poles, announce projects, and disappear. Governance should not be about photo ops it must transform lives,” Isma declared. She warned that without urgent action, Nigeria’s rural poverty crisis will deepen, undermining democracy.
Andrew Mamedu, Country Director of ActionAid Nigeria, urged Nigerians to demand transparency from leaders. “Politicians accessed these villages during campaigns why abandon them now? Development only happens when citizens insist on accountability,” he said.
Recent data reveals that over 70% of rural Nigerians live in poverty, with many lacking access to basic infrastructure. Mamedu stressed that sustained advocacy is critical to reversing this trend.
Despite government shortcomings, ActionAid’s interventions in Tungan Ashere have made a difference. The NGO, in partnership with Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD), established an ICT centre, empowering youth with digital skills. Women’s agricultural and empowerment programs have also boosted livelihoods.
“The resilience of these women is inspiring. They prove that with the right support, communities can thrive,” Isma noted.
