The Association of Tourism Practitioners of Nigeria (ATPN) South West Region has officially activated its Ogun State Chapter, ushering in a new era for tourism development in the Gateway State.
The historic event, held at the June 12 Cultural Center in Abeokuta, saw the formal validation of Mrs. Melutia Ogunremi as the Pioneer Chairman of the chapter, alongside her executive team. The ceremony, graced by key industry stakeholders, marks a pivotal step in harnessing Ogun State’s vast tourism potential.
The activation ceremony attracted prominent figures in Nigeria’s tourism sector, including Alhaja Olabisi Kamal, Chairman of the Lagos ATPN chapter, Dr. Abiodun Lasisi, Chief of Staff to the ATPN South West Vice President, and Apostle Sanyaolu, Chairman of the Ogun State Teaching Service Commission. Also in attendance were media representatives, including Mr. Apata Oyeniran, Editor of Tourism News at Independent Newspaper, and Mr. Paul-Sylvester, a guest from Greenwich University, London, who commended ATPN’s efforts in driving sustainable tourism development.
In his keynote address, Hon. Apata Samson Nunayon, National Vice President of ATPN South West, emphasized the need for tourism departments in all 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Ogun State.
“Tourism is a goldmine waiting to be tapped,” he declared. “By establishing functional tourism units across all LGAs, Ogun can boost grassroots tourism, create employment, and stimulate economic growth.” He urged the state government to prioritize this initiative, highlighting its potential to transform rural communities.
The newly inaugurated Pioneer Chairman, Mrs. Melutia Ogunremi, expressed her gratitude to ATPN leadership for the opportunity to steer the Ogun State Chapter.
“Our vision is to position Ogun as a top-tier tourism destination by leveraging our rich cultural heritage, historical sites, and natural attractions,” she stated. She further outlined plans to collaborate with stakeholders, including traditional rulers, private investors, and government agencies, to develop sustainable tourism projects.
Mr. Paul-Sylvester, representing Greenwich University, UK, lauded ATPN’s initiative and stressed the importance of eco-tourism and community-based tourism in Nigeria.
“Ogun State has immense potential for culturally sensitive tourism development,” he noted. “With proper planning, the state can attract global tourists while preserving its heritage.” His remarks reinforced the need for innovation and public-private partnerships in tourism development.
