President Bola Tinubu has issued a strong warning to police officers against the intimidation and mistreatment of citizens, emphasizing that their authority must be used responsibly in service to the nation.
Speaking at the 2nd Annual Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Awards in Abuja on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, Tinubu represented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio stressed the importance of accountability, professionalism, and respect for citizens' rights.
"The power you hold is for protection, not oppression. It is a tool for service, not abuse," he declared, urging officers to uphold the rule of law and reject misconduct and corruption.
Tinubu also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to modernizing the police force through advanced equipment, training, and welfare improvements. "We are dedicated to building a police force equipped with cutting-edge tools, intelligence-driven strategies, and strong community ties," he said.
Honoring outstanding officers at the event, the President praised their dedication but challenged them to set higher standards. "You make Nigeria proud now raise the bar further by leading with integrity and excellence."
He concluded by underscoring the need for a "trusted, efficient, and respected police force," vital for national security and public confidence.
