Hon. Mobolaji Ogunlende the Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, In a move to transform the lives of vulnerable youths, has taken government support directly to young people living under bridges and on the streets.  


Dubbed the "Change From Street Life Initiative," the program provides free health insurance, vocational training, and social reintegration opportunities to empower at-risk youths.  

 

The initiative kicked off with high-impact engagements at Sandfill Underbridge in Lekki and Eko Atlantic, where Hon. Ogunlende and his team interacted directly with street-connected youths. Partnering with the Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA), the government enrolled beneficiaries in free health insurance schemes, ensuring access to medical care.  


“We’re not just talking about change we’re making it happen,” said Hon. Ogunlende. “By providing health coverage, mentorship, and skills training, we’re giving these youths a real chance at a better future.”  


The program goes beyond temporary aid, offering: Free vocational training in legal trades and crafts, Psychological support and counselling, Family reintegration programs, Linkages to Lagos State’s informal economy opportunities.


Social workers and health officials were on-site to register participants, while development partners provided guidance on sustainable livelihood options.  


This initiative aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s THEMES+ agenda, focusing on social inclusion and youth empowerment. The goal? To reduce street homelessness and reintegrate marginalized youths into society as productive citizens.  


“No one should be left behind,” Hon. Ogunlende emphasized. “We’re calling on NGOs, private sector leaders, and communities to join us in this mission.”  


With health coverage secured and skills training underway, many participants now have a real shot at independence. The Lagos State Government plans to expand the program, ensuring more youths escape street life for good.  


"This is just the beginning,” Ogunlende declared. “A safer, stronger Lagos starts with lifting everyone up.”
