Hon. Apata Samson Nunayon, Vice President of the Association of Tourism Practitioners of Nigeria (ATPN) South West Region, has applauded Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to tourism development following an on-the-spot inspection of the ongoing Door of Return Tower project in Badagry.
A former Supervisor for Tourism in Badagry Local Government and a proud indigene, Apata described the project as a landmark initiative that will elevate Badagry’s status as a top-tier tourism destination in Nigeria and beyond.
The Door of Return Tower, designed as a counterpart to the historic "Door of No Return", symbolizes the reconnection of the African diaspora with their roots. Apata emphasized that the project aligns with Governor Sanwo-Olu’s broader vision to position Lagos as a global tourism hub while fostering cultural preservation and economic growth.
"This project is more than just a structure; it’s a beacon of hope, unity, and economic empowerment for Badagry and Lagos State," Apata stated. "Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration has demonstrated a clear commitment to tourism, and this initiative will attract international attention, boost local businesses, and create jobs."
During the visit, Apata congratulated the Badagry community, highlighting the project’s potential to: Enhance cultural tourism by drawing global visitors. Stimulate local entrepreneurship through hospitality and ancillary services. Preserve historical heritage while fostering modern development.
The ATPN’s endorsement further solidifies the project’s significance, with Apata affirming the association’s readiness to support initiatives that drive sustainable tourism growth in Nigeria.
Badagry, a key historical site linked to the transatlantic slave trade, stands to benefit immensely from the Door of Return Tower, which is expected to: Boost tourism revenue for Lagos State. Strengthen diaspora engagement through annual festivals. Position Badagry as a must-visit heritage destination.
Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration continues to prioritize tourism infrastructure, with projects like the Badagry Marina redevelopment and the Eko Tourism Corridor further enhancing Lagos’s appeal.
With construction progressing, stakeholders anticipate the Door of Return Tower will be completed on schedule, potentially hosting major cultural events by 2026.
