Over 64,000 students from Nigeria, Benin Republic, and Togo took part in the National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE) for admission into Federal Unity Colleges on Saturday. The National Examinations Council (NECO) conducted the test, with officials reporting a smooth and orderly process.

Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Ahmad, praised the exercise, noting the high turnout as proof of public confidence in Unity Schools. “The exams started on time, students were disciplined, and invigilators were efficient,” she said. A total of 34,000 girls and 30,000 boys registered, highlighting strong interest in federal colleges.

Lagos State dominated registrations with over 15,000 candidates, while Togo had the lowest at just 17. NECO Registrar Ibrahim Wushishi confirmed 109 candidates from Benin Republic and Togo participated alongside Nigerian expatriates. “This reflects the regional appeal of our Unity Colleges,” he said.

No hitches were reported materials arrived early, exams began promptly, and special-needs candidates received braille materials and support. Wushishi expressed optimism for upcoming WAEC and NECO senior secondary exams.

Admissions will be merit-based but consider state quotas and civil servants’ needs, said Binta Abdulkadir, Director of Senior Secondary Education. Results will determine final selections before the new academic session begins.
