The Lagos State Government has warned residents, particularly those in low-lying areas, to stay vigilant as intense rainfall is expected to cause flash floods across multiple zones.

State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed that weather stations detected thunderstorms and widespread heavy rainfall with dense cloud cover. The forecast indicates prolonged downpours, increasing flood risks in vulnerable communities.

Wahab emphasized that neighborhoods near rivers and lagoons face heightened danger due to potential flash floods with strong currents. Residents are advised to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rains and assess conditions before venturing out.

With schools on mid-term break, parents are urged to prevent children from playing in floodwaters, which pose drowning hazards. Motorists and pedestrians were also cautioned against wading through floods, as submerged vehicles and swift currents could be deadly.

The commissioner reiterated a ban on dumping waste in drains, as clogged waterways exacerbate flooding. Despite year-round drain maintenance, excessive rainfall can overwhelm infrastructure, requiring community cooperation to minimize damage.
