In a heartfelt response to a devastating tragedy, the Kano State Government has announced a N1 million compensation for each of the 22 families who lost their loved ones in a fatal road accident.
The young athletes were returning from the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State, when their journey ended in tragedy just kilometers from home.
Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo, speaking during a condolence visit to Nasarawa Hospital where the victims' remains were kept, described the incident as a "national loss." Representing Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Gwarzo emphasized that the athletes had proudly represented Kano, with some even winning gold medals before the tragic crash.

Governor Yusuf also ordered the immediate release of funds to assist grieving families and ensure the injured receive top-tier medical care.
"These young heroes were on a national assignment when tragedy struck. Kano State will stand with their families beyond this moment of grief," Gwarzo stated.
As burial preparations begin, the government has vowed to provide long-term support to help families heal. The sports community mourns the loss of these rising stars, whose lives were cut short on their way home from serving their state.
