Chidinma and Ataga |
In a dramatic courtroom testimony, Chidinma Ojukwu, the prime suspect in the 2021 murder of Super TV CEO Michael Usifo Ataga, recounted the chilling moment she discovered his lifeless body in a Lekki apartment.
Appearing before Justice Yetunde Adesanya at the Lagos High Court on Thursday, the former University of Lagos student gave a gripping account of the events leading up to Ataga’s death.
Chidinma, led in evidence by her lawyer, Mr. Onwuka Egwu, narrated how she returned from buying food and juice on June 15, 2021, only to find Ataga unresponsive in a pool of blood.
"I rushed to him, but his eyes were half-shut, and there was no pulse," she said, her voice trembling with emotion.
The 21-year-old revealed that she met Ataga in November 2020 through a mutual friend. Describing him as "generous," she disclosed that he paid her school fees and supported her cosmetics business.
According to Chidinma, Ataga invited her to spend time with him ahead of his birthday. Due to renovations at his Victoria Garden City home, they opted for a short-let apartment at 19 Adewale Street, Lekki, checking in on June 13, 2021.
She detailed their activities: dining out, buying wine, and smoking together. However, the mood took a dark turn when she claimed Ataga requested cannabis and Rohypnol, sending her N15,000 for the substances.
On June 15, Chidinma said Ataga asked for more cannabis but insisted she cover the cost. He later gave her money for food and juice.
After delays—blamed on COVID restrictions and a mix-up over okro soup—she returned to the apartment to a horrifying scene: blood at the entrance and Ataga’s lifeless body inside.
In a state of shock, Chidinma admitted to cleaning up, changing clothes, and packing her belongings—along with Ataga’s bank documents, ID cards, and jewelry—before fleeing in a cab.
Next Hearing: April 28, 2025
The case has been adjourned as the trial continues.
This high-profile case has gripped Nigeria, raising questions about crime, justice, and the circumstances surrounding Ataga’s tragic death.
