Gunmen stormed the Rubi community in Butura District, Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, killing 11 people in a brutal late-night attack, authorities confirmed Friday.
The Plateau State Police Command, through spokesman Alfred Alabo, disclosed that the assailants invaded Ruwi village around 9:20 p.m. on March 27, opening fire on residents attending a wake-keeping ceremony.
Commissioner of Police Emmanuel Adesina, who visited the scene, denounced the violence and ordered an immediate manhunt for the perpetrators.
“We received a distress call at 10:00 p.m. about armed men attacking the village. Sadly, innocent lives were lost, and several others sustained injuries,” Alabo stated.
The Bokkos Cultural Development Council (BCDC) also confirmed the death toll, calling for urgent intervention to prevent further bloodshed.
State Commissioner for Information Joyce Ramnap condemned the killings and urged residents to avoid reprisals, assuring that security agencies would apprehend those responsible.
“The government remains committed to protecting all citizens and ensuring justice prevails,” Ramnap said.
This latest violence underscores the persistent security challenges in Plateau State, with calls for intensified measures to safeguard vulnerable communities.
