Aladeotan David, the vice chairman National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) Lagos West chapter, has launched a welfare support scheme for Kikiriri female prison and Awhajigoh prison to be visited on the 21st and 28th of February 2025.
He announced this at a press briefing held on Friday, February 19, 2025, at Iba LCDA secretariat, Ojo, Lagos State.
NYCN is the umbrella body, coordinating structure, and mouthpiece of the youths and youth organizations at all tiers of government in the Federation. With a mission statement to ensure the actualization of the full potential of Nigerian youth, among others.
Aladeotan, said, "The program is set to maintain and strengthen the relationships between inmates and the community or support networks, which can aid in rehabilitation and reintegration into society. The visitation promotes emotional support, reduces feelings of isolation, and encourages positive behaviour while incarcerated.
This would have significant benefits for both inmates & visiting youth on areas such as awareness & and education, positive role modelling, empathy development, encouragement for inmates, community engagement, breaking stereotypes, and supporting rehabilitation efforts.
"During this first phase, we shall be visiting two prisons in Lagos West. The Kikiriri female prison and the Awhajigoh prison on the 21st and 28th of February with food and other valuable items. In this phase, we shall gather information and updates about inmates with minor cases and then seek collaboration with NGOS, concerned individuals, and possibly legal bodies to set them free and rehabilitate them with their families. This process shall be the second phase of the project, and the third phase will centre on evaluation, education, empowerment, and continuous education," he added.
