The Zamfara House of Assembly has suspended eight members for alleged misconduct, conspiracy, mischief, and illegal sitting.
Bilyaminu Moriki, the House speaker, announced the suspension on Monday during the assembly's plenary session in Gusau, the capital of Zamfara state.
Bello Mazawaje (PDP-Tsafe East), the majority leader, proposed the suspension motion.
Mr Mazawaje stated that the lawmakers' suspension was permitted due to a violation of the Assembly's Order 10, Rule 9.
He said that on Thursday, the suspended members broke into the office of the clerk and sergeant at arms of the assembly and held an illegal meeting.
Mr Mazawaje stated that the lawmakers also blocked some members from entering the assembly chamber.
He urged lawmakers to support the motion to suspend the eight members for alleged contempt of the house, conspiracy, illegal sitting, mischief, and misconduct.
In response to the motion, the deputy speaker of the House, Adamu Aliyu (PDP-Gummi 2), described the lawmakers' attitude as unfortunate.
Mr. Aliyu stated that lawmakers must be sanctioned in order to keep the state legislative process running smoothly.
The chief whip of the House, Rilwanu Marafa (PDP-Anka constituency), described the lawmakers' alleged illegal sitting as a disgrace to the assembly.
Mr Marafa urged his colleagues to take disciplinary action against the lawmakers.
Nura Dahiru (APC-Birnin Magaji Constituency), the minority whip in the House, urged the assembly's leadership to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and ensure justice and fairness.
