Mr. Subair Nosirudeen Adisa, the Financial Secretary of formerly Iworo Ajido High School, now Iworo Ajido Model College, Old Students Association, has said that with the support of the association, the success record of the school has been raised from 0% to 94%.
He disclosed this at the reunion of the Iworo Ajido Model College Old Students Association, held in the school on Tuesday in Badagry, Lagos State.
He said, The primary objective of the association is to intervene and support the government in building infrastructure and raising the standards of education of the alma mater, "even though we are not here but our children are here."
He said the association believes that, with all hands on deck, the standard of education in the country can improve. It's a general thing that is affecting all aspects of the country, be it technology or electricity. The first priority of the association is to raise the standards of education for our coming generation. The association has raised the records of the school from 0% to 94%.
"A student needs to know that focus and seriousness are important. The parent should know the importance of education in the lives of their children. They need to encourage and guide their children in personal reading and guide them as they work to improve their mental capacity to face their education. We were able to push for renovations of infrastructure and reconstruction of shares, benches, and desks. And has employed support teachers for the students and lessons for further reading. We also helped them procure WAEC past questions and those of ACWA for junior school," he added.
Prof. Olusegun Whenu, of Lagos State University, said every stakeholder must see the reason to fund education, as the government alone cannot provide all the needed infrastructure and equipment. Which will provide the best education needed in the country and has discouraged travelling outside the country for education.
He said, as the standards of education have fallen and funding education is not something the government can do alone, there is a need for companies and organisations to take up their social responsibility by partnering and collaborating with schools to fund education. All of us have to join the revolution in reviving education.
The budget for education should be increased, and infrastructure should be improved because he has visited other countries and knows how things work over there. "All these ASSU and teacher strikes should stop, the government should fund education; and those who are working should be properly paid so they can have a sense of belonging.
"People are sending their children to better universities outside the country why can't we develop our own and build our university to the same standard that people send their children to outside the country? Yes, we know things have been damaged and cannot be repaired in a single day. At the same time, the government must do more; welfare is very important, and everything is improving except salaries. ASSU is not fighting solely for salary increases.
"We see that alumni do a lot for their school in the United States; It is more about doing projects that will touch the lives of the children. Like a computer, library, or structure, we need to collaborate. We need to synergize. People in town should know they have to fund education because if we fail to train them, it's going to be a problem for society."
Rt Rev'd Ife Senasu Okupevi, Lord Bishop of Diocese of Lagos, Anglican Communion, says religion has various roles to play in education today, especially Christian religion. Most of our leaders passed through Christian schools, especially Anglican schools, and many of them can sing Christian hymns. Religion has a bigger role to play.
Our leaders should please note that they have a bigger role to play in the economic, political, health, power, and educational aspects of Nigeria. If all these aspects can be put in place, poverty will be reduced to its minimum. God has used us to vote for them, and this shouldn't be in vain. We should have the dividend of democracy, and at the same time, we will continue to pray for them.
Mr. Akinyemi Asade, a member of the alumni association, said, "The school has provided a platform for us to excel in life. It has also helped us to achieve something. We should be working to improve the standards of learning to make it better than what was left behind. ensuring that other people coming behind will find it attractive to learn to better their lives.
All stakeholders have a role to play, starting with the government, the teachers, and the students. The government is to continue to provide infrastructure to make sure the teachers stay in Nigeria and their welfare is taken care of. The teachers should then be able to give their best towards uplifting and giving the children the best," he said.
