In Ikorodu, Lagos, on Wednesday, a 47-year-old man named Sunday Aweta was charged with stealing pumpkin leaves (ugwu) and assault.

A three-count charge against Mr. Aweta includes allegations of theft, assault, and illegal use of a dangerous weapon.

The defendant committed the offense on June 10 at around 9:00 a.m. in Oreyo in the Igbogbo neighborhood of Ikorodu, Lagos, according to the prosecution, Insp. Christian Okonofua.

According to Mr. Okonofua, the defendant allegedly took 500 Naira worth of pumpkin leaves from the complainant, Chiwendu Uche.

He claimed that without warning, the defendant reportedly hit a woman Oluchi Enyiko, and the complainant with a cutlass.

The prosecutor claimed that the defendant harmed Ms. Enyiko by forcibly cutting off her right four fingers with a cutlass.

The prosecution claims that the offences violate Sections 287, 170, and 173 of the Lagos State Criminal Law from 2015.

But the defendant entered a not guilty plea to the accusation.

The defendant was given N50,000 bail with two sureties by magistrate T.A. Shotobi.

The case was adjourned until June 22 for mention.
