The meeting of the Council of State

The meeting of the Council of State is being presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari in the Council Chamber of the State House in Abuja.

The meeting, the first of its kind this year, takes place about two weeks before the general elections, amid fuel scarcity and a cash crunch caused by the Central Bank's naira redesign policy.

Former Heads of State General Yakubu Gowon and Abdulsalami Abubakar are in attendance, as is former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo participated virtually in the meeting.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Senate President Ahmad Lawan, House Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami, and two former Chief Justices of Nigeria were also in attendance.

Prof Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Godwin Emefiele, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, and Usman Baba, Inspector General of Police, are among those in attendance to brief the council on the naira cash swap policy and its implications for the economy and security.

The National Council of States is a government organ in Nigeria. Its functions include policy advice to the executive. The Council does not have executive power, but it does play an important advisory and consent role in government operations.
