President Muhammadu Buhari, Governor Nasir El-Rufai |
Governor Nasir El-Rufai has accused President Muhammadu Buhari's cabal in the Presidential Villa of plotting Bola Tinubu's defeat in the February 25 election.
"I believe there are elements within the Villa who want us to lose the election because they did not get their way. They had their candidate," the Kaduna governor and Tinubu ally claimed. "Their candidate lost the primary election. They are still attempting to cause us to lose the elections. They're hiding behind the president's desire to do the right thing."
This was revealed by Mr El-Rufai in an interview with Channels Television on Wednesday morning.
Would you like to know if we have the names? "I believe it is best that you ask the governor," Mr Buhari's media aide Garba Shehu said when asked about the Kaduna governor's allegation.
His claim comes just days after Mr Tinubu accused the Buhari administration of sabotaging his presidential bid.
Mr Tinubu had accused the regime of hoarding fuel and using the so-called naira redesign to sabotage his presidential bid at a rally in Abeokuta last week.
However, aides to the former Lagos governor later claimed that Mr Tinubu's statement in Abeokuta was not directed at Mr Buhari's regime.
Mr Tinubu accused the Buhari administration on Wednesday of using the raging fuel scarcity, newly introduced naira notes, and the Central Bank of Nigeria's cash handling policies to undermine his chances at the polls next month.
"You're hoarding both fuel and naira. We will, however, vote, and we will win this election. Whether you change the ink on the naira or spend money until you are in debt, things will not go as planned," Mr Tinubu said during a campaign stop in Abeokuta. "We will win the election, and our opponents will fall short."
