Soldiers and a ballot box |
Akinlabi Akinnaso, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo's Idanre Local Government Area, was assassinated.
Mr Akinnaso, also known as 'Oluomo,' was killed by soldiers stationed at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Collation Centre in the Owena area of Ayetoro, Idanre.
The PDP Chieftain was said to have been accompanying Festus Akingbaso, the newly elected winner of the House of Representatives for Ifedore/Idanre Federal Constituency, to receive a Certificate of Return from INEC when he was 'accidentally shot'.
According to sources who spoke to Peoples Gazette in a chat, Mr Akinnaso was allegedly trying to force his way into the collation centre when he was shot.
His body had been taken to the mortuary at the hospital.
Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the Ondo police spokeswoman who confirmed the incident, said she was still gathering details and would get back to her.
Mr Akingbaso, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, was declared the winner of the Ifedore/Idanre Federal Constituency on Sunday.
In the weekend election, he received 24,263 votes, defeating incumbent Tajudeen Adefisoye of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who received 20,064 votes.
