President Muhammadu Buhari's administration has ordered the closure of all tertiary institutions ahead of the elections on February 25 and March 11.

"In light of the foregoing and concerns expressed about the security of our respective institutions' staff, students, and properties, the Honourable Minister of Education, Mal Adamu Adamu, has directed that all universities and Inter University Centres be closed and academic activities be suspended between 22 February and 14 March, 2023," according to a letter issued by the National Universities Commission.

The universities were instructed to close from February 22 to March 14.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) asked President Buhari last month to temporarily close all tertiary institutions until after the February 25 and March 11 elections. According to the association, the shutdown will allow students to obtain their PVCs.

"The office of the NANS vice president (external affairs) calls on the federal government of Nigeria to immediately close all tertiary institutions temporarily to allow students to collect their PVCs from their LGAs and vote in the forthcoming elections," NANS vice president Akinteye Babatunde stated.
