President Muhammadu Buhari |
President Muhammadu Buhari has told Kashim Shettima, the running mate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential candidate Bola Tinubu, that he will respond to him when he hands over power in 2023.
Buhari was responding to Senator Shettima's flowery speech, according to a statement signed by Garba Shehu, the President's aide on Media and Publicity.
Shettima was chosen as Bola Ahmed Tinubu's running mate in the APC's contentious Muslim-Muslim ticket, and was unveiled in front of the party's leadership on Wednesday.
"I will respond to your speech when I hand you and your boss over. You will win, God willing," Buhari told Shettima.
Buhari stated this when he met with Shettima and Tinubu at the Presidential Villa shortly after he was unveiled, adding that he is pleased with the choice of the former Governor of Borno State as running mate.
"I wish you nothing but the best. Your consistency in the party is admirable. You completed your two terms as Governor admirably.
"You've maintained contact with your base. You show your support for the person who succeeded you at every important occasion or event. This is admirable," he said.
Tinubu and his party went ahead and appointed Shettima as vice president.
Despite opposition from Nigerians to a Muslim-Muslim or Christian-Christian ticket, Tinubu and his party chose Shettima as their vice presidential candidate.
Buhari, who was unable to select Tinubu, a Southern Muslim, as his running mate in 2014, has stated that he is confident that the former Lagos State Governor and his running mate will be victorious in 2023.
Nigerians have had a wide range of mixed reactions to Shettima's selection. While some believe that competence should be prioritised, others argue that Nigeria does not require a same-faith presidency at this time.
