According to Nigeria's information minister, Lai Mohammed, the recent security advisory issued by the US Embassy in Nigeria has put the country and its citizens in a "panic mode."
"I want to say categorically and unequivocally that, whatever the intention of this security alert or this travel advisory, what it has done is terrorize our people and put the nation in a panic mode," Mr. Mohammed said in Kaduna on Friday during the presentation of the state's quarterly security report.
In October, the US and UK embassies issued a security advisory warning of a possible terror attack in Nigeria's capital, Abuja, and evacuated their staff.
The security advisories named government buildings, worship centers, and markets as potential targets for terrorists, forcing Jabi Lake Mall to close in fear.
President Buhari's administration, on the other hand, has dismissed the security advisories as "clickbait." Bashir Magashi, Minister of Defence, stated that all Nigeria requires from the US is "prayer," not a "confusing" terror alert.
"What did the US expect us to do when they issued the security alert?" To tell Nigerians to flee? "No!" exclaimed Mr Mohammed rhetorically.
