TO SECURITY AGENCIES AND ALL CITIZENS, PRESIDENT BUHARI SAYS: BE ALERT, DON’T PANIC

President Muhammadu advises the nation's security establishment and all citizens to remain vigilant and cautious about security, emphasizing the importance of avoiding panic.

He urges people to remain calm. In a press release made available to the public by Shehu Garba the President's Senior Special Assistant on publicity and media.

The recent changes in travel advice issued by the US and UK governments should not cause concern.

Terror threats are listed in foreign governments' travel advice to their citizens, and Nigeria is no exception. Terrorist attacks are also a high risk in many Western European countries, according to UK and US travel advisories. Indeed, both the UK and the US advise their citizens to avoid traveling to each other's countries. Unfortunately, terror is a global reality.

However, this does not indicate that an attack in Abuja is imminent. Since the July prison raid, security measures in and around the FCT have been strengthened. Increased monitoring and interception of terrorist communications ensures that potential threats are detected earlier.

Attacks are being thwarted. Security agents are proactive in identifying threats to keep citizens safe – much of their work is unseen and must be kept confidential.

The safety of Nigerians remains the government's top priority. Security forces are working around the clock to prevent harm.

The President assures that the government is on top of the country's security situation.

While security threats are real and have been with us for a long time, the nation's military, police, and other security agencies have demonstrated a capability to deal with them, as evidenced by the fact that the majority of our partners, including the United Nations agencies in our midst, have not seen the threat as sufficient to warrant any form of panic or order citizen evacuations.

The President emphasizes that while being security conscious, alert, and cautious is critical, it is also critical that responsible members of society do not create situations that cause unnecessary panic.

President Buhari applauds the military and other security agencies for the recent improvement in national security, and directs that additional precautionary measures be put in place, and that these should not be relaxed now or during the upcoming festive season.

President Buhari is optimistic that the nation will emerge victorious from the current challenges it faces, given the ongoing efforts of the military and other security and intelligence agencies, as well as the active support of the civilian population.
