A police officer was killed, another was injured, and a political science professor was among those kidnapped by suspected gunmen on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
On Friday night, suspected kidnappers in military uniform laid siege to the Dominica University area on the expressway and abducted an unspecified number of passengers.
Professor Adigun Agbaje of the University of Ibadan was abducted.
According to a relative of the lecturer who requested anonymity, the kidnappers contacted the family and demanded N50 million in ransom.
Adewale Osifeso, the Police Relations Officer in Oyo State, commented, saying that operatives of the command assigned to toll-gates learned of the incident on Friday night.
According to Mr. Osifeso, the command dispatched anti-crime patrol operatives, tactical teams, police mobile men, and local hunters led by the Divisional Police Officer to rescue the abductees.
According to him, an officer attached to the command paid the ultimate price during the process, with another severely injured and currently responding to treatment.
"Expended ammunition shells and four abandoned vehicles have so far been recovered at the scene," Mr Osifeso said, adding that "the Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Williams, has ordered full-scale scientific and technologically aided investigations."
The "deputy commissioner in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department was leading the charge," according to the police spokesman.
Mr. Osifeso, on the other hand, has asked residents in and around the area to notify the command if they see any gunshot victims or other unusual occurrences.
