Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), stated that the union's strike is preparing today's students to make sacrifices for future generations to have basic amenities and easy access to quality education.
During the union's congress, Osodeke spoke at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State.
The ASUU president stated that the current strike by union members will continue until the Federal Government agrees to their terms, The Nation reports.
"The affected students are making sacrifices for school development so that future generations can benefit," he said. "Some people will make sacrifices for anything to grow. You'll agree that Nigerian universities are on the verge of failing. This is a struggle for future generations as well as for them."
Osodeke warned the nation of a mass exodus of Nigerian lecturers as a result of the ongoing strike.
"Large numbers of lecturers have left not because they hate this country, but because of the way they are treated," he said. "There is no country in the world where academics will go on strike, and you believe that seizing their salary is the best weapon to use."
"On this strike, we will go as far as we can until they agree to our demands." he added.
