Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, Lagos State Governor.

The Lagos State Government has directed heads of private schools in the state to reintroduce history as a stand-alone subject in schools.

This was revealed in a memo sent to private school owners and heads on Saturday by Mrs Esther Pelumi, Director of Research at the Lagos State Ministry of Education's Office of Education Quality Assurance.

The memo, which was obtained by the Sunday PUNCH, stated that while history is required in both primary and secondary school, it is an elective subject in senior secondary school.

"I have the Director General's (QEQA) directive to inform you that the teaching of History as a stand-alone subject is returning to schools," it said in part.

"The subject has been reintroduced in the national curriculum and the current Lagos State Unified Schemes of Work for primary and junior secondary schools in accordance with the directive from the Nigerian Education Research and Development Council."

"You should be aware that, while the subject (History) is required in both primary and junior secondary school, it is an elective in senior secondary school."

"I am also directed to inform you that the subject will be taught in primaries one and two, as well as JSS one and two, in the 2022/2023 academic session."
