Bola Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, has urged his Labour Party counterpart, Peter Obi, to warn his supporters against spreading lies and defaming him and other candidates.
In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, the Tinubu Campaign Organization's Director of Media and Communications, the politician warned that "falsehood and disinformation will not win elections."
"The Tinubu Campaign Organization has appealed to the Labour Party's presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, to call his supporters to order and to allow this election circle to be about issues that will advance Nigeria's growth, progress, and stability," the statement said.
Mr Onanuga's remarks come after a false report that Ghana's President Nana Akufo-Addo wrote a letter to Mr Tinubu asking him to support Peter Obi and focus on his health.
Mr. Akufo-Addo condemned the development on his official Twitter account, saying it was the result of deliberate deception with the intent to deceive the public.
"I have not written such a letter to the APC leader and will not do so in the future." Ghana and Nigeria have enjoyed decades of cordial, strong, and brotherly relations, and I will not be the one to interfere in Nigeria's internal affairs and politics," Mr Akufo-Addo tweeted on Tuesday.
"We discovered that the fake news about Akufo-letter Addo's was first published on June 22 by a rogue platform with the URL worlsnews.space (sic) and site identity World of News," according to the statement. "A content analysis of the site revealed unequivocally that it is a Biafra news platform." The same day, the fake news was reposted on Facebook by Peter Obi Support Group, proving that Biafra campaigners and Peter Obi supporters are the same."
The Nigerian general election is scheduled for February 2023, but political shenanigans are expected to increase as campaigns begin in September, according to the INEC timetable.
Tinubu, Obi, and former PDP Vice President Atiku Abubakar are seen as the main contenders in the upcoming election.
