A stray bullet has hit one SSS 3 student of Kankon Secondary
School in Badagry, on the 19th of June.
In a clash between the Joint Border Patrol Team (JBPT) and
some suspected illegal rice dealer at Irosu community, Badagry west Lagos
state.
The deceased is Aladeotan kehinde, a 19 years old boy, who
was coming from farm and was hit by the stray bullet fired by the JBPT which comprise
Army, Custom and Immigration.
Reported by Daily Trust, the JBPT were carrying out routine patrol
along the community, close to Owode Apa border port in search for rice
smugglers.
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered, “However in the
process of disagreement the JBPT started shooting into the air.
“In the process a student of Kankon Secondary school, Aladeotan
kehind, was hit by a bullet who died immediately.”
Speaking with the chairman of National Youth Council of Nigeria
(NYCN) Badagry west chapter Mr. David Aladeotan, “Kahinde was hit by the bullet
on his way from coconut farm, and he died on the spot.
“Despite the assurance given to the JBPT, by the community leaders
that the villagers were not involved in rice smuggling, they still went on to search,
where they couldn’t find anything of such.
“They then picked some motorcycle parked by some riders. In the
process of getting their motorcycles back it degenerated into chaos, where the JBPT
started shooting sporadically.
“The stray bullets hit two people one died on the spot, while
the other is receiving treatment in the hospital.”
Mr. Abdullahi Hussiain, Public Relation Officer, Seme Custom
Area Command. Confirming the incident said “The JBPT was on their routine check
in the area, where they blocked the bush paths in the village. Some motorcycles
used for rice smuggling was apprehended.
“They then made an attempt of burning security operative vehicle,
this forced the officers to shoot into the air to scare them away.
“In the process a stray bullet hit one of the group leaders.”
Speaking with the father of the deceased, Mr. Oyedele Aladotan.
People Gazette, further gathered that “After killing my son, they placed cutlass
in his hand and two bags of 50kg foreign rice behind him to make people think he
was a smuggler.
“They still insisted on taking his corpse to their office, but
I refused that they must give him to me for burial.”
He further expressed himself on how his son’s life was wasted.
He said “I have since buried my son her beside my house, but
it’s seriously painful that despite my efforts and struggle to give them a better
life, I couldn’t eat the fruit of my labour.
“My son has no child, nothing to show that he ever existed. His
death remains a painful one.”
He then plead with the government, for a better job to take care
of the remaining six children, so he won’t die from this tragedy.
“I am not asking for money for the replacement of my dead son.
But the government can assist me by placing me on a regular job, instead of the
contract work I’m doing currently in the local government where I’m paid #10,000.
“They can also assist me in taking care of the other six children,
so I won’t die form the pains of my dead son.” He pleaded.
He appreciated, the intervention of commodore Morakinyo Akinyode
the commander of Nigeria Air Force (NAF) Forward Base, Badagry. The Local
government chairman Badagry West Mr. Joseph Gbenu and his deputy for their condolence
visit.
