LAGOS, NIGERIA – The future of governance in Lagos State took a bold step forward this week as the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Lagos State Chapter, hosted its highly anticipated Youth and Governance Symposium 2.0.

Held at the prestigious Main Auditorium of the University of Lagos, the event served as a powerful rallying point for young leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders dedicated to the theme: “Building the Future of Governance Through Youth Participation.”

Hon. Mobolaji Ogunlende, the Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, headlined the event, joining the Deputy Governor of Lagos State for an insightful Fireside Chat. The symposium, organized under the visionary leadership of Engr. Adigun Olalekan, focused on bridge-building between the state’s political leadership and its vibrant youth population.

A defining moment of the symposium was the official unveiling of the Lagos NYCN Ward Champions. In a direct charge to these emerging leaders, the Deputy Governor emphasized the urgent need for localized action. The Ward Champions are tasked with spearheading community-driven initiatives specifically designed to combat drug abuse and other social vices that threaten the stability of Lagos neighborhoods.

During the event, the Deputy Governor was formally decorated as the Grand Patron of the NYCN, Lagos State Chapter, solidifying the government’s commitment to fostering a collaborative environment for youth-led development.

Reflecting on the success of the gathering, Hon. Mobolaji Ogunlende emphasized the importance of sustained engagement.

"I sincerely appreciate all our party leaders, distinguished guests, and respected political office holders whose presence and support contributed to the success of the event," said Hon. Ogunlende. "Together, we will continue to create platforms that empower young people, strengthen civic engagement, and advance the development of our dear Lagos State."

The symposium underscored that youth participation is no longer a peripheral goal but a central pillar of the Lagos State government’s agenda. By equipping young leaders with the tools, recognition, and institutional support needed to thrive, the state is effectively laying the groundwork for a more resilient and inclusive political future.

The event concluded with a renewed sense of purpose among the attendees. As the newly inaugurated Ward Champions prepare to return to their communities, the message from the symposium remains clear: the youth are not just the leaders of tomorrow, but essential partners in the governance of today.
