Governor Sanwo-Olu Pledges New Palace and Infrastructure for Badagry at Akran’s Funeral

BADAGRY, LAGOS — Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has assured the Badagry people that he has stalled the construction of the Badagry Central Palace. He also called on the residents of Badagry to preserve the enduring legacy of peace and unity left behind by the late Akran's of Badagry, Aholu Menu Toyi I


Speaking during the nine-day funeral rites at the royal palace on Wednesday, the Governor emphasized that the best way to honor the departed monarch is to uphold the harmony he championed for nearly half a century.


Addressing a somber yet appreciative crowd, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the late Akran as a pillar of togetherness and a staunch custodian of the rich cultural heritage that defines Badagry. The monarch, whose reign spanned 49 impactful years, was celebrated for his ability to bridge the gap between ancient traditions and modern governance.


"He stood for tradition and the rich cultural heritage that Badagry is known for," Sanwo-Olu stated. "I advise the people of Badagry and Lagos to emulate the legacy the late monarch stood for, so that peace will continue to reign in the town."


Beyond the tributes, the Governor brought tidings of development to the coastal town. He officially announced the resolution of previous land disputes that had stalled the construction of the Badagry Central Palace. With budgets and approvals now finalized, Sanwo-Olu assured residents that construction would commence imminently.


In a further boost to local infrastructure, the Governor reiterated his administration's commitment to completing the second phase of the Market General Hospital Road to Ajido. He also promised that all outstanding compensations owed to residents would be settled, ensuring that the transition period is marked by progress rather than neglect.


The Chairman of Badagry Local Government Area, Babatunde Hunpe, echoed the Governor’s sentiments, describing the late Akran as more than a ruler, but a father to all. "Under his leadership, Badagry remained a land of peace where dialogue prevailed over conflict," Hunpe noted, thanking the Governor for his empathetic leadership and personal presence at the rites.


Traditional leaders, led by the Aholu of Ajido, Saheed Adamson, also lauded the late monarch for reorganizing grassroots leadership and facilitating the approval of four new traditional rulers in the region.


The funeral prayers saw a significant turnout of the Lagos State executive cabinet, including: Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, Deputy Governor of Lagos State. Members of the State Executive Council. Leading traditional rulers and political office holders.
