BADAGRY, LAGOS STATE – Hon. Babatunde Hunpe, the Executive Chairman of Badagry Local Government has officially described the late Akran of Badagry Kingdom, Aholu Menu-Toyi 1, as a monumental figure whose influence extended far beyond the boundaries of his traditional domain.

During the 9th-day prayer session held on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, the Chairman emphasized that the monarch’s transition has left a significant vacuum in the cultural and political landscape of Lagos State and Nigeria at large.

The remarks were part of a formal address delivered during a high-profile condolence visit by His Excellency, Mr. Babajide Olushola Sanwo-Olu, the Executive Governor of Lagos State. The Chairman lauded the Governor’s presence as a "powerful demonstration of leadership with empathy," noting that the visit underscored the administration's deep-seated respect for traditional institutions and the pivotal role they play in grassroots governance.

Throughout his historic reign, Aholu Menu-Toyi 1 was recognized as a firm custodian of heritage and a vital bridge between ancient tradition and modern administration. He was widely regarded as a voice of moderation and a promoter of social harmony. The Chairman noted that under the Akran's leadership, Badagry remained a sanctuary of peace where dialogue was consistently prioritized over conflict, making the throne a rallying point for all citizens regardless of their political or religious affiliations.

The Executive Chairman highlighted that the Governor’s personal commiseration validates the belief that traditional rulers are critical partners in peace-building and regional development. This synergy between the state executive and the traditional stool has been a cornerstone of the progress witnessed in the region over recent years.

In a poignant moment during the ceremony, a passionate plea was made to the Governor regarding the Central Palace project. This initiative was described as exceptionally dear to the heart of the departed monarch. Aholu Menu-Toyi 1 envisioned the palace not merely as a residence, but as a unifying space where traditional chiefs and elders could collectively administer justice, promote harmony, and drive the socio-economic advancement of the kingdom.

As the community continues its period of mourning, the focus has shifted toward preserving the values of service, honor, and dignity that defined the Akran’s life. The Local Government leadership urged the Lagos State Government to support the completion of the Central Palace as a lasting tribute. Proponents believe that bringing this vision to life would serve as the ultimate immortalization of a monarch who devoted his entire life to the unity and advancement of the Badagry Kingdom.
