BADAGRY, LAGOS STATE – In a landmark presentation that sets the agenda for the year ahead, the Executive Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Hon. Babatunde Hunpe, on Tuesday unveiled a comprehensive ₦12.34 billion budget for the 2026 fiscal year. Dubbed the “Budget of Inclusiveness and Development,”
The proposal was formally presented on December 2, 2025, to the 8th Legislative Council at the Aholu C.D. Akran Legislative Chamber, signaling a renewed push for grassroots transformation and equitable growth in the historic coastal region.
Hon. Hunpe, addressing the newly inaugurated council, detailed a financial plan where "Capital Expenditure takes precedence at ₦6.66 billion (54%), aimed at infrastructure renewal, education, healthcare, water expansion, and youth empowerment. Recurrent Expenditure is pegged at ₦5.68 billion (46%), allocated to salaries, pensions, and essential services."
The chairman emphasized that the proposal was meticulously crafted to address the aspirations of residents across all wards, reaffirming a commitment to human capital development and economic stimulation.
The council boss did not shy away from highlighting the need for collaborative effort to achieve these goals. In his speech, Hon. Hunpe appealed for continued civic responsibility, with a specific focus on tax compliance. He stressed that "collective effort and timely fulfillment of financial obligations by residents are indispensable for the successful execution of the development agenda." This call for partnership underscores the administration’s view of the budget as a social contract, requiring mutual commitment from both the government and the governed to unlock Badagry’s full potential.
Hon. Bankole Mautin Asokere, the leader of the house acknowledged the significance of the moment marking the first budget presentation of the 8th Legislative Council, inaugurated in July 2025. Hon. Asokere described the budget process as a “constitutional covenant” that must genuinely reflect the people's needs.
While pledging harmonious collaboration with the executive, he raised critical concerns about untapped revenue streams, urging for improved Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), better monitoring, and reliable data to guide fiscal decisions. His remarks underscored the legislature’s dual role as a partner and a watchdog in the governance process.
Gbanga Hunponu, the Local Government Treasurer affirmed that the budget was designed as an all-encompassing document, painstakingly prepared to leave no sector behind.
