BADAGRY, Lagos – In a comprehensive address marking his first 100 days in office, the Chairman of Badagry Local Government, Honourable Babatunde Hunpe, has unveiled an ambitious slate of achievements and future projects, signaling a new era of development for the historic community. Announcing massive ₦400 million empowerment scheme and critical infrastructure projects, aims to transform the local economy and social welfare landscape.

Speaking to press and stakeholders at the Council Chamber in Ajara on Saturday, Hunpe framed the milestone as a foundation for "a greater Badagry rising," aligning his administration's goals with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope agenda.

"Our promise was to build a local government that works for everyone, prioritizes development, and embraces creativity in solving long-standing challenges," Hunpe stated. "This is not a time for celebration alone, but a moment for accountability and a renewal of our commitment to the people."

Infrastructure and Economic Boost Take Center Stage

A key focus of the administration's initial thrust has been on infrastructure and economic rejuvenation. Chairman Hunpe announced that construction is already underway on three major community link roads, a move designed to enhance transportation, boost commerce, and improve safety for residents.

He confidently projected that if the current pace is maintained, Badagry would witness at least 40 completed roads by the end of his first term. “We want road development to be a signature of this administration,” he affirmed.

In a significant boost to household economics, Hunpe unveiled the 'Asiwaju Conditional Cash Transfer' programme. This ₦400 million empowerment scheme is set to directly support 4,000 families with ₦100,000 each, disbursed over the next 20 months. Additionally, the council plans to establish POS businesses for one hundred residents to foster financial independence among youths and women.

Education, Healthcare, and Tourism Get Major Upgrades

The 100-day scorecard also highlighted significant investments in social sectors. The administration has completed the full reconstruction of a primary school, delivering three new classroom blocks, offices, modern toilets, and learning tools. "We are investing in the minds that will shape the future of this community," Hunpe remarked.

In healthcare, the Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC) in Pota has been completely remodelled, serving as a model for the planned upgrade of all PHCs in the locality. The council has also conducted medical outreach programs in underserved areas.

Reaffirming his commitment to Badagry's rich heritage, the Chairman highlighted the inauguration of a Local Government Tourism Committee and the successful hosting of this year's Door of Return Festival, a collaborative effort with Olorunda LCDA, Badagry West LCDA, and other partners. “Badagry must reclaim its rightful place as Nigeria’s foremost historical tourism destination,” he declared.

Governance Reforms and a Promise for the Future

The administration has also initiated governance reforms, including a revamped, digitally-enhanced revenue collection system designed to broaden income sources without overburdening residents. Support for traditional rulers has been reviewed upwards, and with five new waste carriers procured, the council is set to launch a dedicated Anti-Refuse Brigade to tackle sanitation issues.

Hunpe promised unwavering focus and dedication. “We will not slow down. We will not be distracted. We will not break the trust you have placed in us. Together, we will continue to move Badagry forward.”
