LAGOS, Nigeria – Team Brazil, backed by the Claure Group, electrified the waters of the Lagos Lagoon to claim a decisive victory at the E1 Lagos Grand Prix on Sunday. The win marks the team's first-ever triumph in the groundbreaking UIM E1 World Electric Powerboat Series, throwing the inaugural championship race wide open.
Piloted by the formidable Timmy Hansen, Team Brazil dominated the event from start to finish. Hansen showcased impeccable skill, leading the pack through the intense group stages, the knockout race-offs, and ultimately, the grand finale. His commanding performance left little room for rivals, establishing Team Brazil as the team to beat on the challenging new African circuit. The victory was a masterclass in electric powerboat racing, from qualifying to the final checkered flag.
The podium was completed by a strong performance from Team Blue Rising, who secured a commendable second place. They were joined by Team Drogba, who rounded out the top three. In a surprising turn of events, the championship front-runners, Team Rafa and Team Brady, who were previously locked in a battle for the series lead, were shut out of the podium positions, significantly altering the championship landscape heading into the final round.
The impact of this victory extends far beyond the trophy. By winning the Lagos Grand Prix, Team Brazil earned a crucial 38 points, catapulting their season total to 89. This dramatic haul keeps their championship hopes vibrantly alive and sets the stage for a winner-takes-all showdown. The penultimate race in Lagos has effectively reset the title fight, ensuring the season finale will be a nail-biter.
Beyond the on-water action, the E1 Lagos Grand Prix was a historic milestone for international sports, marking Africa's debut as a host continent for the world’s first all-electric powerboat championship.
