The Nigeria Customs Service Board (NCSB) has officially approved a new $300 duty-free limit for imports. This exciting new policy is set to take effect on September 8, 2024.

The decision was confirmed by Customs spokesperson Abdullahi Maiwada, following the board's 63rd regular meeting chaired by the Finance Minister, Wale Edun. This initiative, known as the "De Minimis" threshold, is designed to stimulate Nigeria's e-commerce sector, eliminate clearance bottlenecks, and solidify the country's status as a regional trade hub.

Under this new framework, all imported goods valued at $300 or less will be exempt from customs duties and taxes, provided they are not prohibited items. This exemption applies to: Low-value e-commerce consignments (online shopping parcels). Passenger baggage (goods brought in by travellers).

This aligns Nigeria with global best practices, making it easier and cheaper for individuals and small businesses to import goods. The policy mandates the immediate release of eligible packages, drastically reducing clearance delays.

To prevent abuse, the duty-free exemption is restricted to a maximum of four importations per year per entity. The Nigeria Customs Service has issued a stern warning against invoice manipulation or duty evasion. Non-compliance will result in severe sanctions, including **forfeiture of goods, arrest, and prosecution under the NCS Act 2023.

The NCS has established multi-channel helpdesks to guide stakeholders and ensure the smooth implementation of this new trade facilitation policy.

In a separate but equally significant action, the board addressed recent viral videos showing officer misconduct. It approved the demotion of two officers and reinstated two others after review. All sanctioned officers must undergo a mandatory medical re-evaluation. The board reinforced its zero-tolerance policy towards abuse of banned substances and unethical behaviour, reaffirming its commitment to accountability and integrity.
