BADAGRY, Nigeria – The Badagry Tourism Development Centre (BTDC) has announced the appointment of Dr. Abolaji Sewhude Akande as its pioneer Director General. The appointment, effective immediately, marks a significant step in the centre's mission to unlock the vast historical and cultural potential of one of Nigeria's most iconic regions.
Dr. Akande’s three-year tenure was confirmed in an official statement released by Prince Olu Kosoko Aremo, the Board Chairman of the BTDC.
Dr. Sewhude Akande arrives at the role with a formidable and unique portfolio blending media savvy, technological understanding, and deep cultural advocacy. A graduate of Computer Science from the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, who also holds an Honorary Doctorate in Arts and Culture, Akande's career has been at the intersection of innovation and heritage.

His prior experience within the Ebonyi State Ministry of Tourism, where he received official commendations, provided him with critical insights into public sector tourism development, preparing him for the task ahead in Badagry.
Beyond his government experience, Dr. Akande is a recognised force in cultural communication and community engagement. He is the Publisher of CityMood Magazine and formerly served as the Director of Communications at the Badagry Chamber of Commerce.
His commitment to preserving heritage is further demonstrated through his role as a Federal Government grant recipient and promoter of the ACM Project, a pioneering initiative focused on African children’s cultural heritage, supported by major national bodies. As a volunteer with Lagos Beach Cleaners, he also brings a proven commitment to environmental sustainability—a key pillar of the BTDC's mandate.
The mandate of the Badagry Tourism Development Centre is comprehensive and critical. Charged with promoting, preserving, and developing Badagry’s rich tourism, culture, and heritage both locally and internationally, the centre's responsibilities include research, advocacy, and ensuring the sustainability of heritage sites.
A key focus will be on developing innovative tourism products, fostering strategic partnerships, and prioritising environmental protection. Dr. Akande’s unpublished manuscript, "*Badagry - A Port of History*," signifies his deep personal investment and scholarly understanding of the region's narrative.
In his first official statement, the newly appointed Director General pledged to foster inclusive growth. “I will work with all stakeholders to position Badagry as a global tourism and heritage destination while ensuring local communities benefit from the sector’s growth,” Dr. Akande affirmed.
