A fatal accident on the busy Ore-Benin Expressway has left one person dead, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Ondo State Command.
The crash, involving a petrol tanker and a wood-laden lorry, occurred on Wednesday, highlighting yet again the dangers of speeding on Nigerian highways.
Samuel Ibitoye, FRSC Sector Commander in Ondo, confirmed the incident in a telephone interview, stating that the collision was caused by excessive speed. The accident involved six individuals four men and two women with one female victim losing her life.
“One life was lost in the crash between a truck and a lorry, and preliminary investigations point to speeding as the primary cause,” Mr. Ibitoye explained.
The FRSC commander urged motorists to exercise patience and adhere to traffic regulations, particularly speed limits, to prevent further tragedies. He also warned against indiscriminate parking on road shoulders, emphasizing that the state government has provided designated parking spaces for large vehicles.
“Drivers must prioritize safety. If fatigued, they should use the approved parking facilities rather than risking lives by stopping on the highway,” he added.
The body of the deceased has been taken to the State Specialist Hospital in Ore, while survivors received immediate assistance. The FRSC continues to monitor the expressway, a major transit route known for frequent accidents due to reckless driving.
This incident serves as a grim reminder of the consequences of speeding and disregarding road safety measures. Authorities are calling for stricter compliance with traffic laws to curb avoidable fatalities on Nigerian roads.
