The House of Representatives has launched a full-scale investigation into the alleged mismanagement of the N1.06 trillion Nigeria Community Action for Resilience and Economic Stimulus (NG-CARES) programme.
The massive social intervention scheme, designed to provide relief to vulnerable Nigerians, is under scrutiny after reports that beneficiaries have not felt its impact despite huge government spending.
Chairman of the House Committee on NG-CARES, Rep. Abubakar Kusada (APC-Katsina), revealed that the federal government had already disbursed $696 million (N1.06 trillion) to states and the FCT for social safety nets, palliatives, and economic stimulus. Yet, millions of Nigerians still suffer under harsh economic conditions, raising suspicions of fund diversion, mismanagement, or fraud.
Kusada stated that the committee would invoke Sections 88 and 89 of the Constitution to uncover the truth. Several states reportedly claimed billions for, Cash transfers to vulnerable households. Agricultural support (seeds, fertilizers, equipment). Labour-intensive public works. Grants to small businesses (MSEs). Market upgrades & storage facilities.
"If verified, we will show the impact. If not, we will name and shame," Kusada declared.
The probe aims to, Trace all disbursed funds and verify their use. Expose states that diverted palliatives. Refer fraud cases to anti-graft agencies (EFCC, ICPC). Ensure refunds if funds were misused.
