Navy Officer Dies in Lagos Anti-Smuggling Raid as Boat Capsizes

A Nigerian Navy officer, OS Nuhu, tragically lost his life during a high-stakes anti-smuggling operation in Lagos. The incident occurred when a boat carrying seized contraband rice capsized in the Badagry waters, leaving another officer severely injured.

The Nigerian Navy launched a major raid in Badagry following undercover reports exposing rampant rice smuggling in the area. Sources reveal that naval personnel arrested 20 boats before tragedy struck one vessel overturned, drowning OS Nuhu instantly. A second officer suffered critical injuries and was rushed to an undisclosed hospital.

Captain Oyeleye Omotayo led the operation, targeting smugglers who illegally transport rice from Benin Republic into Nigeria. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) confirmed the raid at the Badagry Port-Novo creek, where multiple boats were seized.

This incident has reignited allegations of corruption within the Nigerian Customs Service. Smugglers reportedly pay N250,000 per boat to bypass Customs checkpoints, flooding markets with illegal rice. Dealers claim officials turn a blind eye, allowing tons of contraband to enter through Badagry’s Marina Customs base, Iya Afin, and Erekiti.

Exclusive footage obtained by SaharaReporters shows smugglers unloading rice-laden boats, raising concerns about economic sabotage. Legitimate traders lament losses as smuggled goods dominate the market.

While the Nigerian Navy remains silent on the officer’s death, the Customs PRO, Abdullahi Maiwada, has not responded to inquiries. This tragedy highlights the dangers of anti-smuggling operations and the urgent need to tackle corruption in border security.
