BADAGRY, LAGOS – Hon. Setonji David, the Member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Badagry Constituency 2, has declared his unwavering readiness to support media practitioners in the region.
The lawmaker made this pledge on Sunday during an unexpected visit to the annual meeting of Badagry media professionals, emphasizing that their work is fundamental to the sustenance of democracy.
Hon. David, who was warmly received by the gathering, took time to address the crucial yet often overlooked contributions of journalists. He stated, "Overtime, journalists have been the ones that fought for the democracy we all are enjoying today, but you have never been given the proper recognition either from the government or the people." His remarks resonated deeply with the attendees, highlighting a long-standing sentiment within the media community regarding the lack of acknowledgment for their pivotal role in nation-building.
Demonstrating a profound sense of empathy and understanding, the lawmaker expressed a personal connection to their struggles. "Despite that I'm not a journalist, I really feel what you have been going through," Hon. Setonji stated.
He then moved from empathy to making commitment, "I'm ready to support you whenever you need me." This pledge was met with appreciation, signaling a potential new chapter of collaboration between local government and the Fourth Estate in the Badagry region.
Beyond promises of support, Hon. Setonji offered words of encouragement, framing a free press as an indispensable pillar for governance and development. "A free press is the backbone of democracy," he asserted.
He urged the Badagry media practitioners not to give up on their vital work, reminding them that "their voice is very important for the government and community development." This statement underscored the idea that robust journalism is not an adversary to government but a necessary partner for accountability and progress.
The unexpected visit and strong declarations from a sitting lawmaker have been hailed as a significant morale booster for local journalists in Badagry. Media practitioners at the meeting expressed optimism that this pledge would translate into tangible support, fostering a more enabling environment for their work. This development marks a positive step towards recognizing and empowering the media as a key driver of democracy and community advancement in the historic town of Badagry.
