A commercial tricycle rider has been killed in a tragic head-on collision with a Mercedes-Benz SUV driving against traffic along the Badagry Expressway near Oko-Afo, Lagos State.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the hit-and-run incident, which occurred over the weekend.
LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq stated that the SUV, a Mercedes-Benz 4MATIC with a customized plate (OSUNFNKE), was speeding against traffic from Ile-Epo when it smashed into the tricycle (MUS 716 QM).
The impact left the tricyclist with severe injuries, including a dislocated knee, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The SUV driver reportedly escaped immediately, leaving behind the wrecked car and the deceased. LASTMA and FRSC officials quickly responded, clearing the wreckage to restore traffic flow.
The victim's body was taken to Badagry General Hospital mortuary, while both vehicles were handed over to Morogbo Police Division for investigation.
LASTMA’s General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, slammed the incident as a blatant disregard for traffic laws and a serious threat to public safety. He warned motorists against one-way driving, emphasizing stricter enforcement to curb such fatal accidents.
