The Nigerian government has dramatically reduced passport processing times to just two to three weeks, thanks to a major automation overhaul, Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo announced.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ workshop in Abuja, the minister revealed that the Ministry of Interior and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) have eliminated bureaucratic bottlenecks, allowing applicants to upload documents online and speeding up verification.
Passports now ready in 2-3 weeks if no issues with documentation. Nigerians abroad can renew passports in just 10 minutes from home. Automation has saved the government nearly ₦1 billion annually. New e-visa systems, mandatory expatriate insurance, and e-gates at airports to streamline immigration.
"Your phone is now an immigration office," declared Tunji-Ojo, emphasizing the shift to hassle-free digital services.
Permanent Secretary Magdalene Ajani and NIS Comptroller-General Kemi Nandap reinforced the reforms, highlighting enhanced security, transparency, and global compliance in Nigeria’s migration processes.
